Interesting Pre War Folk Art Stocks
In a previous Post from a week ago I showed an interesting set of N Frame Pre War service stocks. I aquired these because of their interesting appearing nature. They appear to be a 1930s created " Folk Art " N Frame stock set. The Buffalo Nickel raised emblems, under magnification have a 1936 date code on them where the date stamp is on Buffalo nickels coins.
The raised metal emblems have an underlying copper color metal base, which had a worn silver top layer color applied to them. They show to me a lot of creativity from a past N Frame Smith owner.
A lot of work went into making this set of well done
personalized stocks. I was fascinated enough to get
them , along with other Pre War stock sets shown in my previous Post exhibiting Curts terrific restoration
work. They present themselves really nice on an N Frame such as my 38/44 Smith as they may have in the 1930s. I thought you guys may like a view of them. The Post War N Frame stock sets shown in my last picture will be in my next Post thread on some of Curts Post War terrific stock work. Please excuse my poor picture taking. I hope they come thru alright. Any help from you tech savy members to orient the pics correctly is much appreciated..
Best, Randy !!

Watch your flash/lighting, ruins the look of the nickels.

What a terrific set of stocks. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I fiddled with one of your images. We'll see if it prints vertically when I hit the "Submit Reply" button. (edit: Wow, it worked, and I can't explain why.)
The killer of detail in your photos is the white background. The "white" tricks the camera's automatic exposure setting and causes darker items -- generally the "subject" of the photo -- to be far underexposed. The shadow near the bottom of this particular image doesn't help.
As a student of photojournalism many moons ago I learned about using an 18% gray card to set exposures. That doesn't mean you need a gray background, but using a piece of old Kansas barn wood as the backdrop achieves almost the same goal for me.
I don't shoot many photos of stocks, but when I do I like them oriented as they would be if they were on the revolver if it were perfectly level in the photo (that's my OCD kicking in).

Would like to see a picture of the back to see how the coin was attached.
Glue or pin?

Emblem Attachment
Hello Rich,
The rear of the emblem is visible but its hard to tell whether they have a low placed pin or just has a bonded attachment in the stocks. They seem to be fitted and attached very well. Hope the pictures help w your request.
Best, Randy..

Very cool looking. The hole on the back appears empty so my WAG is they used epoxy.

Thanks Randy!
Looking at the back it does appear they used a glue.
Looking at how deep the hole is,it appears they likely ground down the backs for them to fit. Do you believe the same? Seems the thickness of the nickel would have gone through to the back if not shaved down.

Epoxy maybe? I inlaid a USMC EGA into a set of grips about 35 years ago and used epoxy for that. Still have them and have fired thousands of rounds with them on several M1911's. Still in place.

Hello Rich a d All ,
I believe the Medallions are an emblem or facsimile
of a 30s era Buffalo Nickel. The convex nature of them rising above level makes me believe this Whatever they are , they've been inset into the wood
really well done. I find them Just a neat 30s period individualized set of N Frame Stocks. I don't know if I'll keep them or possibly pass them on. I don't know how to evaluate a poss value to them. I would think
they're not as valuable as a Silver Medallion set, but still nice as a really nice condition N Frame Smith Pre-War set with some real character to them.
What say my S&W buds ?
My Best !!
Randy
