About a year ago I found a 5" .357 (1954) in excellent condition at a gun shop in N. Georgia for $1400 OTD. It is pretty much flawless but no box. I was happy with the purchase.

I traded for this one about seven years ago and valued it at $1500 at that time. Maybe 98% and grips SN matches the gun but no box/papers. One of my favorite 357s; wouldn't sell it but if I did would be looking for $2200- $2500. Those odder length pre-27s in excellent condition don't show up very often.
Now, 95% might be a different story. Much subjectivity in those percentage ratings though and your 95% might be my 98% but value drops quickly as condition drops. If I saw another even close to the condition of mine at $1500 I'd grab it too. Good luck.

You guys kill me on good deals on collectible guns at local gun/pawn shops. First of all I never see anything interesting, and in the rare event I do they want more than the top bid on Gunbroker.

Congratulations- you got a great deal on that one. As you probably know, 5" .357 Magnums (aka pre-Model 27s) are not rare but are very desirable. Many Forum members think that the 5" bbl models are the most balanced and aesthetically pleasing of all the S&Ws. 10+ years ago I bought this 6-1/2" .357 Magnum (s/n S140334, ca. 1955), about the same age as yours, from a local gun store for $545...I wouldn't take $1500 for it now. Enjoy!

It was a toss up, 3 1/2" or the 5" .... not enough stashed to get both.

I imagine a 95% 5” pre 27 would fetch $2000+.
About 3 years ago I picked up a 1953 3.5” pre 27 for $1000. I paid a lot more for my 3.5” 27-2s. She’s well loved.

In your scenario, I would have left with the 3.5 and a smile.
