Default 3” Pre-Model 10?

Hello everyone. Long-time lurker first time posting. Anyway, saw this at a pawn shop. Any idea when this may have been produced? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a pre-model 10 in a 3” barrel. Any info would be greatly appreciated:

5 screw
S/N 58325

Thanks!

The barrel has been cut down and very poorly refinished outside the factory. The over polishing and nickel plated trigger and hammer indicate the work was not done by S&W.

Thank you - I figured it was cut down. Looks like they sandblasted the poor thing.

Cut down barrel and re-nickled but a very cool looking old gun. If the price was low enough and everything else checked out OK I might buy it. I would just want to be able to shoot a few rounds to make sure the sights were on target.

They’re only asking $300. Mechanism is nice and tight. I may be able to get them down a little further with the information you guys have provided. Again, thank you so much.

OTD under $300 I’d take a flyer on it. Polish it up and change grips. Cool truck/beater if it shoots to POA.

I agree with the others that it has had the barrel cut and was refinished by someone other than S&W.

But it would not be called a "pre-Model 10." It is much older than that. Since you didn't provide the serial number, we can't be precise, but it is from no later than 1927 and no earlier than 1922. Hence, it is a .38 Military & Police model.

$300 is not a bad price for it as a shooter, and it might be fun to carry and shoot with that 3" barrel.

I have a few guns that have been refinished outside of the factory and that have had barrels shorted. They we’re all priced accordingly and are great shooters. You can have fun shooting this. A set of magnas and and a BK adapter would look good.

Welcome to the Forum.

Pull those Goodyear grips and make sure there is a serial number on the butt!!!

As Mike noted below, the SN stated in the original post is most likely NOT the correct number.

58325 is probably not the serial number, but rather an assembly number found in the yoke area with the cylinder open. Take off the grips, and the serial number ought to be on the butt. There should also be the same serial number on the rear face of the cylinder, and on the flat on the underside of the barrel, viewed when the cylinder is open.

If that gun shoots good, 300 bucks for it would be a steal around here and the pawnshops would probably have it listed for double that.

Got it for $300 out the door - layaway until I get paid. Anyway, the serial is 544312. Here are some more pics. Excuse my funky looking thumb - baby rattlesnake got me in 2012!

Pre-Model 10s are considered to be those from the approximate 1947-57 period. Yours is from the Great Depression era. Not too long ago it would have been considered a sub-$200 beater. Good only for hiding under your truck seat. But things are different today.

Baby rattle snakes can be just as dangerous as adults, if not more so. That's a pretty cool truck gun.

Thanks - looking forward to it.

I would post pictures of the bite but I don’t want anybody to throw up. That little sucker released all its venom on my thumb.

So I was cleaning up the gun and found it’s engraved to a Pat Gordon from Lakeland, FL. Looked up that name and found a person name Pat Gordon, who was a sheriff there in 1956 who was convicted of a few crimes. I know that name is pretty common but thought I’d share.

On another note, I ordered some Altamont faux pearl grips with Texas star medallions (I’m a native Texan) which will be ready in a few weeks. Thanks again to you all for being friendly and helpful!

I agree, Ken...Adding the right grips to even a poorly cut down, bumper chromed old derelict can make an improvement worth keeping......Ben

After this purchase, I’ve got the wheel gun fever. I still love my 1911 but there’s just something nostalgic and awesome about them. Some of my earliest memories as a kid were my dad shooting his S&W .357 (he was a cop and King Ranch security) and me beside him with my BB gun. I miss the old man. Anyway, thanks again for the kind comments.
