Default K-38 ID

This auction item is listed as a Model 10 but looks like a K-38.
Could use some help on it's true identity.

It is a K-38 Masterpiece, probably from the early 1950s (likely 1951). Not a Model 10. Those grips are correct.

Yes, do not correct the auctioneer.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Just won it for $550 plus fees.
It's a local auction and I previewed it but didn't say anything at the time. Was just hoping I was correct.
Now, do I correct the auction house when I have to do the paperwork?

You did well. If you put target grips on it in the future, safeguard the originals. They add value. No idea about paperwork requirements of the auctioneer, but if it must be registered with the state, which is the case in CA, it could require a fuller description than “S&W .38 Revolver”. If so you should call it a S&W K-38 Revolver or whatever CA specifies for a description.

Around here you would pay 18% buyers fee plus 8% tax, which puts you around $700 OTD. Not bad for that good looking K38 Masterpiece.

I think I've had a memorable Memorial Day weekend, Also snagged this Colt Officer Model Match in .22 for the same amount- $550. Even though the grips are aftermarket they really feel and fit nice.

That's a good looking K-38 Masterpiece and doesn't look to have been fired or handled much. Even if you are into it for close to $700 by then time you have paid all the fees, it's still a better deal than if you found it at an LGS or gun show where it would probably have been tagged $999 here in California where everything is at least 20% higher than the rest of the country.

Both guns are great acquisitions. Congratulations.

The stocks on the Colt have that "LAPD" feel to them. In the late '40s and early '50s several officers, including members of the LAPD Shooting Team, made custom grips for other officers who wanted to dress up their revolvers but didn't have the skill or patience to do the work themselves. On both Colts and S&Ws, installing stocks with aligned finger grooves might require cutting some steel off the front corner of the grip frame. There were also LAPD grip designs that left the grip frame unmodified.

Here's a thread illustrating how that works.

A Fuzzy K38

The grips on your new Colt may be Farrants. I have forgotten the distinguishing characteristics of the different stock designs coming from the other LAPD makers. Some forum members are well informed on this matter and may be able to help you with that.

It is a Pre-14 K-38 made in 1950. It looks great so I am thinking it was a Safe Queen for many generations.

Thank you for sharing.

Very interesting thread about the LAPD shooting team. Will definitely check for the cut frame as soon as I can. Gives the gun some history if it was modified by one of the members.

Another K38 Masterpiece 5-screw with probable Sanderson stocks that was also listed as a Mod 10 hammered to me for $375 today.
Deals aren't as easy to find as they used to be, but they still happen.

Dang lucky sods!

I don't think the previously mentioned Colt 22lr has Fuzzy grips. They are not semi open in back.

Same auction! I personally previewed that one too. Yes, it was a good buy.
There were several nice Smiths that went for attractive prices yesterday. Congrats!

I may have posted this previously.

Response back from Hogue:

Yes, the grips look to be Hogue pre-CNC made Pau Ferro Colt Python (I frame). Inlet and rough shaped by mechanical pantograph equipment then Hand fit and Checkered.

Thank you for the awesome pictures.
