Hello,

I just bought this 5-screw K22 on impulse. The finish is bad, but the action is crisp. Have not shot it yet. Serial is #2032XX

I am wondering...

1) Are these "Coke" grips?

2) I paid $354.50 Out-the-door. Good price?
Fair price? It is a done deal, just
wondering what the consensus is.

Thanks!

No, those are standard non-relieved diamond targets.
Cokes only came on the .44 and .41 N-frames, however there were some very early "coke-like" targets on some K-frames, but yours are not it.

Those are non-relieved diamond targets, made out of walnut. So, no, they are not cokes.

I see that Dick and I posted at the same time

Those are very nice old targets though, with only minor nicks in them, and no real flattening of the checkering, so I would take good care of them. They themselves are worth a fair amount of money.

Nope on the Cokes. Non relieved diamond targets on a K frame revolver. "Cokes" are on an N frame (larger) revolver. Still expensive stocks, though.
Fair price with those grips for sure.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

At least the action seems nice. Hopefully she will shoot well.

Those grips are diamond targets. Look to be in nice shape. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think S&W put cokes on K frames.

This subject is something still open for some debate but per the Factory Expert the "Cokes" were never made for the "K" Frame guns. There are some folks who would like to contend that there are "K" Frame "Cokes" but they are not the same as the "N" Frame "Cokes" because they don't have the same checkering pattern that the "N" Frame ones do. The "N" Frame stocks have a thinner border of "un-checkered" area on the bottom and the overall set of Stocks are thinner than the then common Garden Variety Target Stocks.

I have seen a couple of early "So Called" "K" Frame "Coke" sets and they do have a bit of a "Coke" bottle shape but if you compare them to a 'known' set of "N" Frame "Cokes" the difference is clear. The bottom area that is not checkered is much thicker and the Stocks are not anywhere near as thin as the "N" Frame Stocks.

So, my opinion is "NO" these are not "Cokes".

FYI, there was a set of those non-releived K Targets on E-bay a couple of days ago that went for around $170.

Wow!

I didn't really *need* another K22, but I do have a weakness for 5-screw S&W pistols. I tried to justify it by telling myself "Hey - if those are Coke grips, it is a helluva bargain!"

I still think I did pretty good....just not as good as I thought I *might have* - oh well, Par for the course.

I had a set of Nehi grips but I swapped them for some Orange Crush grips.

For $354, you did very well.

These are cokes that have been modified to fit a K frame.

I wasn't sure if this gun had "Cokes" or not, and I didn't really "need" another K22.

As you guys pointed out, the gun does NOT have cokes. But something about this gun still spoke to me.

I took her shooting this afternoon and I found out what it was!

I am not trying to be a braggart. I could hardly believe that 6-shot group myself. The group above was before I adjusted the sight. I made a minor adjustment, and got the group underneath it. All shooting was done double-action.

Yeah.....I think I'll keep her!

A lot of people like the "Cokes" so they are collectible and expensive.

My "justification" for buying another .22 was "Hey, it is dirt cheap if those are Coke stocks - I could always sell em!" (although if they *were* Coke stocks, I probably wouldn't have removed them from the gun they came with - I like keeping an old gun intact.)

Coke stocks are not a huge deal to me-- obviously...I couldn't even identify them correctly

The gun is a "shooter" and that is what I care about most. It was a good deal, just not the "great" deal I thought it might have been if it was equipped with the coveted "Coke" stocks.

It's still a great deal for that condition gun and with the grips it has!

This gun is a K-22 Masterpiece. The "Combat" title was reserved for the 4 inch barreled guns - Model 18, 48 and 53 - although by the time the 48 came around the 'Names' had pretty much disappeared.

They are thinner and offer a slight 'palm swell' and are the "ONLY" Smith & Wesson Factory Target Stocks that fit my hand. If you ever get a chance to try a set I think you'll see & feel the difference. Doesn't mean you'll like them! The facts that they were only made for a very short time frame and only available from the Factory on the .44 & .41 Magnums does make them somewhat special in the minds of both Collectors and Shooters alike. Unfortunately, even a Factory Letter can't tell you if a gun came with them because this wasn't the kind of thing the Factory cared about recording.

KKG,
I believe gjamison was referring to the original "thread" gun, not the 6 1/2" shown to illustrate the "coke" grips.

"If there's a 50/50 chance something can go wrong, 9 times out of 10 it will." attributed to Paul Harvey

I stand corrected. I thought he was referring to the gun with the "Cokes" on it. So, Yes, the original gun Posted is indeed a 'Combat Masterpiece'.
