I have to go with the .357 Magnum K, L, and N frames. Heck, I even have a few .357 J's, though loaded with .38+P's most of the time. The J and K frames go everywhere with me.
On the other hand, the fixed-sight N frame .44 Military, .45 Military, and .38-44 Heavy Duty were S&W workhorses for half a century before being eclipsed by the more powerful .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum cartridges.
But on the other, other hand the .38 S&W Special in all model variations is S&W's most successful cartridge, having served military, police, and recreational shooters since, what, 1899? I'd say that the .38 S&W Special is the all time champion.

Of course, they are different guns for different uses, but if you had to choose one revolver as Smith and Wesson's "best," which would you choose, and why? I know it is kind of an apples/oranges/unfair question.
I guess I'd choose the 19 due to versatility and balance.

I'm sorry, but as much as I like the Model 29, I have to pick the Model 27 and it's precursors, the Registered Magnums…..

It clearly owes its success to the K-frame line, and within that line, to the .38 Military &
Police models. Hands down, they have made and sold more of those , than any other model. No
other model comes even close.
The model survives to this day, after more than 100 years. The current versions are
the models 10, 14, and 15 .
