Reading R.Jinks book, he noted that the factory around 1939, made 12 38 HDs in .45 long colt. He states records do not say if they went to an agency or individuals. Have any of yall ever seen one? That would truly be find just to see one, much less own one. Any info is appreciated, Bob in Texas.

I have seen one. David Carroll had it in his collection at the S&WCA meeting in Richmond in 2007, if I remember correctly. I am not very sophisticated but externally the heavy duties and 1926s look identical except for front sight height. So this one looked like a .45 caliber 1926.

Yes, about 1/2 of the 12 guns are known to collectors - some in our members collections and some still in the hands of the original owners descendants. Most went to the LEO people in Southern Calif. ( Imperial County Sheriff, Orange Co. Sheriff, etc.) Sale prices of minty specimens have reached 5 figures. Ed.

hi
here is a picture of one of the 38/44 HD in 45 colt that is in my collection. This one was
shipped in 1938 to the Imperial County Sheriff Dept. in El Centro California, it was one of about 8 that were ordered by this Dept.
I have copies of the orginal orders and
Invoices for these revolvers. Smith & Wesson
charged a $1.00 more to make this revolver in 45 Colt. This revolver is in 98% orginal condition with period correct roper grips that must have been added by the officer. If this
was carried by the officer it was well taken care of. The other revolvers that we have seen
from this order were not in this condition, one had been refinished, and the other one was in about 80% condition.
