Forum member DHENRY has just informed me that our fellow forum member Dan Meigs (Dan M on the board) has suffered a devastating house fire at his home. Dan and his son escaped unharmed, but apparently lost most of everything they owned except the clothes on their backs.
Don made the comment that "Dan's not hearing good things from his insurance company at this point, either."
Dan is a good man, and I can assure you that any help you extend will be appreciated.

Addendum, 4:48 pm-
Don confirms that the contact data below is good.
Rather than create "a fund" and the accompanying logistics and DELAY, I suggest everyone use their stamp to send it directly to Dan.
Simply make your check or money order out to Dan, and address the envelope as you see below.
Godspeed, Dan.

He can be contacted through a friend, whose info I will post below as a pic, since I am not comfortable posting someone's name and address as text when I do not know them and have their permission-

Lee,
I would like to scrape a small donation togther to send along. Should there be some kind of fund set up first? I am not quite sure how to go about sending some funds.
Should we wait, or just send a little something to Mike?
Thanks,
WG840

That is horrible news, Lee. My heart goes out to my friend Dan and I'd gladly participate in any fundraising efforts the group wants to pursue.
Please keep us updated.

I talked to Mike Reber directly, confirmed Dan's situation, and mailed a check to Dan c/o Mike at the address above.
I've never been burned out, but a lot of my friends were in the Laguna Beach fire of 1993 and others in earlier Santa Barbara fires. As I write this I am sitting in Santa Barbara under skies that are half fog, half smoke. The worst of this fire seems to be history, and the evacuation orders are being eased. People are being allowed to return to their homes now. Just amazing that only 80 homes were lost in this fire, given its size and intensity. Whatever we pay our firefighters, it isn't enough.

I am sorry to hear of anyone having to deal with something like this. Especially so, when their insurance co. is giving them a rough ride. I will send what I can to the address posted. Thanks for letting us know Don, Lee.

Help from Kansas is on the way.
Also, I'd like to know which insurance company I will NOT be doing business with in the future.

Thank you to Everyone, I am humbled and grateful for you all
A couple months ago I left my Job, Part of my Compensation package was the Home that I was buying from my Boss. Well with the downturn in the Housing Market I was left with a Home that was Upside down in a mortgage and decided to move out and let the Boss have the house Back. I cancelled my Home Owners Insurance and then asked the agent to put together a renters package for me. Well He didnt follow through/ Neither did I and when I called them Yesterday I was informed that I had no coverage. I will be speaking with an Attorney this next week.
I have been completely Humbled by the Generosity and Kindness that my Friends of different Gun Forums have shown, and I want to Thank you all for your kindness. It brings a tear to my eyes.....
The fire started from my cooking. after fighting to get the fire out it just got worse and worse. I gave up on the firefighting and ran back to my Gunroom and grabbed my ammocart an armful of handguns and my Laptop bag. out the door I went while my son was informing surrounding Neighbors to vacate after calling 911.
Yesterday I spent most of the day sifting through the ashes and getting what I could out of the home. Most of my guns came through the fire in great condition, the Fireproof safe did its job. All the guns that were in Gunrugs came through unscathed. the longguns and few guns that weren't in rugs had a light coat of heat rust on them. I sprayed them down with oil and have cleaned them up to the best of my ability.
Most everything else was ruined in the home.
Again the most important thing was my son Wyatts safety and he is just fine.
Mike Reber listed above is a close friend and I would trust him with anything I owned. You just don't realize how lucky we are until a trajedy like this happens.
My Humble thanks again to everyone
I will overcome this minor setback
Dan M.

Dan, my friend, I was horrified to hear the news about your house. Thank God you and your son survived.
I tried to sell the grips you gave me to raise some money for you but the buyer wouldn't take them, LOL.

You have my email, let me know if I can do anything for you. I'll drop some assistance to you in the mail this weekend.

Dan,
First and most important is that neither you nor you son was harmed.
Thank being said, I would practice some caution as to what you state in print about the incident.
There could be messy legal entanglements."just" from your statement it sounds like your ex-boss still owns the house, yet at least at this moment, you have no insurance.
This could get entagled and convoluted. given our litigeous sociey there could be law suits to go around here.
I'm just suggesting caution of expression.

I know we all like to rush to the defense of a fellow member, and our default position is to side with them against the world, but isn't it a little premature to declare unilaterally that the insurance company is the bad guy here?
There are surely facts not in evidence, and investigations that need to be done, each policy clearly spells put circumstances under which the insurance company will not, and should not have to pay.
If Dan M is entitled to payment, he should get it, and I would fight as hard an anyone here to see that it happens, but lets not jump to conclusions that the insurance company is pulling a fast one without more information.
Just trying to be fair and balanced, and ruled by logic not emotion...
The advice to see a lawyer is sound, as is the advice not to say too much on a public board. I hope if the insurance company has culpability, they pay... hard to get payment though without a signed policy...

And another bump for a good guy. I know from experience that fires like this are devastating, not just from the material loss, but also the mental anguish and stress they bring.
Chin up Dan. My little bit of help is on the way.

sorry bout your loss - but material things can be replaced - I lost a beach home in last hurricane with 40 years of memories - just a slab left standing with a shower tub - you shall prevail!!!!

Update
Things are getting somewhat back to a Normal exisitence. A good friend had a empty Rental that he let Wyatt & I move into. 1st night was on the floor but it was a home.
I want to Thank Everyone here for the prayers and kind words and made as these have been at times the only thing that kept me motivated.
Mike Reber who has been cordinating the relief funds for me, made a deposit today, which I do not have the words to say what it means to both my son and I. It brings tears to my eyes as I type this post.
I want to give thanks Lee and DHENRY for bringing this out on the Forum and then all of the members who have so graciously helped both financially and morally. I couldnt have found better freinds than I have discovered here.
Thank you forom the Bottom of our hearts

Dan
We are all here for you. Having been in your situation I know the value of friends.
When my house burnt down I had no sooner got home to see the remains when I heard the rumble of motorcycles coming up the street...all of my riding friends. They each came up and shook my hand with a bill or two in them saying "This is not a loan...someday you'll get your chance to pay it forward". So I now have the chance to pay it forward and I will challenge you with the same. When the dust settles and things go the circle...pay it forward
Keep well and stay upright. I dont know if the lord provides or not, but the forum does
