Lanyard rings

Are there differences in the lanyard rings of different S&W revolvers?

Apparently not. I've installed lanyard rings from Victory models to M137 Brazilian contracts to M1917 models and they all seem to fit and function just fine.

The one exception may be the rare extended lanyard ring posts that are intended for target stocked revolvers. They have a much longer post.

I've never seen a lanyard for or on a target stock equipped revolver.

There may be some variations in original size or shape on the rings between models but they all seem to interchange.

Dimensionally, they are all the same.

Pre War swivels are case hardened, and show faint case colors.
In 1944, they started BLUING swivels.
So, before 44, a gun should have a case colored swivel. After 44, blue.

The Brazilians, therefore, are seen with both. The pre-war, flat top guns delivered in the 30's should have case colored.
The round top guns delivered in 46 should have blue.

There are actually 3 or 4 variants of swivel when you count the two finishes, and the modification in construction that eliminated an almost invisible cross pin.

And, YES, there were Target stocked revolvers with swivels.

David Carroll had a model 66 made for Rhode Island State Police with long shank lanyard through factory target grips at Tulsa this spring.

I need one for a 1917 Commercial that I have. It's been reblued, so I'm thinking about trying the Numrich Arms repro they have listed. If any of you who know what to look for, take a gander at it and see if it looks right. It's listed under 1917 parts as a butt swivel. I was thinking I danced the butt swivel when I was in high school.

The Rhode Island 6 inch stainless revolvers (I believe they were Model 66s) had lanyards (the oval shaped ones, not the round ones) on a longer shank that went through the S&W target stock.

I recall seeing one that had a "football" shaped or oval depression in the base of the target grips for the swivel. I believe that it was on this forum but I wouldn't guess where or when. My recollection was that it was a factory modification, but I could be wrong there too.

Don't forget the little round ones like on the Navy Model 36's and some foreign contracts.

Good point, but I just tend to think mostly about guns that fall in this category.
