I just acquired a 5 inch nickel plated Heavy Duty, serial number 49141. The frame has a small N on the right side under the right grip. It made one trip back to the factory and has the star on the frame under the grip and is dated 1 3 69. The cylinder is numbered to the gun, as is the barrel. The barrel has the star stamped after the serial number.
My question: the caliber designation on the right side of the barrel does not have the crosses at the start and at the end of the stamp. Would this suggest that the barrel is a replacement?

While I'm no expert, I'm pretty sure that the star after the s/n on the barrel indicates that the barrel is a replacement and was marked with the s/n at replacement.

Think they had replacement barrels in stock in 1969?
I have a 1950 44 Target that had a new barrel put on in 1970 and except for the date there are no markings on the frame or barrel. No stars or diamonds. Just 970 on the grip frame.
BTW- This was a 5" barrel installed and I think it may have been the last one they had as the other gun in the set was cut to 5" rather than fitted with a replacement. Had another barrel been available I assume it would have been used instead of cutting the original.

Joseph:
One thing that is curious about that date you quoted is that it indicates a day in addition to a month and year. I haven't seen that before. Is that number replicated inside the crane area?

Epidoc,
I have not seen, to my recollection, a star in the barrel shroud. I've seen diamonds there which indicate work done or a replacement. Another tidbit on your gun, including yours, there are 4ea 5" Nickel HDs within 17 serial numbers of each other. I would surmise that yours and the others were a run of nickel guns.
Hope that helps,
Bill

My five inch HD (blued) is S/N 49173 and has the same type roll mark as you describe on yours.

First thanks to all who responded. I learn much from your comments. There is a star behind the serial number in the under barrel lug. I confirmed that fact with a magnifying glass. I have limited experience with factory stamped dates, but the stamp does read 1 3 69.
The seller found S&W letter dated September 27, 1994. It has no information about the finish, barrel length or type of stocks. The pistol was shipped to Sutcliff Hardware Company, Louisville, Kentucky on October 4th, 1936.
