I'm glad someone got a deal, obviously the seller made money off it.
Everyone goes home happy.

I put in an initial bid of $100, but missed the end of the auction this afternoon. I'd have gone higher, for sure.

You know, I normally search for the word "wesson". If I would have put in S&W instead I might have seen that. Not sure if I would have went that high, just depends on what I was doing.

Don't feel bad. I missed a super buy on a M29, S/N S 229840, with a nice set of Coke Bottle Stocks. I sent a message asking for the S/N and forgot to ask whether it was a 29-0, 29-1, 29-2. It was advertised as having holster wear on the cylinder and barrel front, but priced at $725 plus shipping I should have just up and bought it and took my chances. Never did get the Model number. I was reluctant about the holster wear, but the stocks alone are worth $300. It sold while I was fooling around.
But what the heck, my pre Model 27 came in Friday's mail and it's better than was advertised. In fact, it's almost perfect. So I'm a happy guy. Can't get them all at once as there'll be nothing to look forward to.
Regards:
Rod

Way to much money for cardboard. Used to look for holsters there. Then when I found out how anti gun they are and now reguire that you have a paypal account, also an ebay anti gun company, just to bid on an item, I refuse to use them. And so should any pro gun person.

You guys are kidding, right? For $400, the box better come with a piece of steel in it.
I have some boxes I need to sell if that's what people are paying for cardboard these days...

I'll give you $200 for every Registered Magnum box you can come up with, and even pay the shipping

One word, rare. The guns go for thousands so hundreds for a box that is very rarely seen is no biggy.
It would be interesting to poll all the RM collectors and see how many boxes exist today in their collections. I would not be suprised if it was only a couple hundred, maybe far less.

According to my records, I have 8.
Gary G. must have had a lot, before he died. I mean a lot.
Later, Mike Priwer

Blackflag,
I doubt it will do anything to clear your mind but if you will read the left column on page 12 of the 3rd Ed. of the SWSC you will see where I related the story of one of my pre-war Magnum boxes.
You are correct that the boxes are just a piece of cardboard. Consequently, the survival rate is much less than the guns which they were intended to protect. Their sole purpose was to protect the guns and label them while they were in inventory. There were something north of 5K of the prewar Magnums produced but many of those didn't ship in the boxes. I'd speculate that a large percentage of the initial owners discarded the boxes when they got the guns just as buyers do today. All of these factors come together to make the boxes infinitely more scarce than the guns.
I'll admit to having less boxes than Mike Priwer, but there a few collectors who reportedly have more...many, many more. So there really aren't enough around to satisfy the demand.
Expensive boxes aren't just limited to the Registered Magnums either. I recall picking up a pristine red box for a K22 Masterpiece at the SWCA meeting about 4 years ago. It was then priced at $1000. I didn't have a gun to go in it and I handled it for a couple of minutes trying to decide if I should buy the box and hope to someday find a gun. As I set it back on the table, a hand reached over my shoulder in a move that would have made an NBA center proud. The hand dropped 10 bills on the table, picked up the box and walked off.

2 RM's, 1 box.
I have located a pristine gun-less large RM box but the seller wants $1,200 for it. I have not had the stomach to purchase it for that price...yet. BUT it is regularly on my mind...

RK,
It makes me swallow hard to say it, but if the owner takes it to the SWCA meeting in two weeks, it will be gone as soon as it hits the table.
The key word here is "pristine". A box of that quality will add that value to the price of a gun of equal quality. Some might consider that a "wash", but to an advanced collector, a gun with a box is much harder to come by than one without a box.
Another factor is the box size. If it is one of the small ones, it is a steal and will add much more than its cost to the total package.
Bob
Oops, just re-read your post and see that your find is a large box. However, my comment on the relative value of the box sizes still stands.
B.
