Your next step is to secure a letter from the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation (to be found in the fourth grouping on this forum). Among other things, the letter will tell you the configuration of the gun when it first shipped from the factory. (As you may know, 45 Colt is an unusual caliber for this model, and may or may not have been originally manufactured as such. The letter answers such questions.)

Welcome to the Forum.

A Triple Lock chambered by S&W in .45 Colt is a rare bird indeed. Twenty three (23) were built by the factory in .45 Colt. Pictures would go a long way in IDing this revolver.

More common is a TL chambered in .455 and later rechambered to .45 Colt.

My holy grail is a TL in 45 colt target.

Yes, one is known to exist.

I had a TL in 45 Colt. Smith who converted it from 455 stamped "45C" on the barrel above 455. Would not chamber by reloads. Factory ammo worked fine but I couldn't size my cases to fit. Sold it on Gunbroker. Hoped to get $400 and it sold for $765.

I have a S&W triple lock with 45 colt stamped on the side of the barrel.
Is it possible this is one of the 23 made? The cylinder is smooth faced.
I'm new to this forum.

No, sorry. The cylinder has been shaved and the caliber was not marked on the barrel. It has been converted.

Welcome to the Forum.

If the rear of the cylinder has no number, it has been shaved for the .45 Colt cartridge, as the Colt round has a thicker rim than the .455. The chamber has been deepened as well.

Stick around. This is the BEST spot on the 'Net to learn about all things S&W.

I don't understand, as I also have a .455 not triple lock.
The rear of the cyl. has recess holes and ser. stamped on it.

The TL is marked on barrel .45 colt. Why would it have to be shaved to shoot .45 colt catrihges?

Head space. The thickness of the Colt rim is larger than .455 Webley. So, either the chambers have to be recessed or the whole face shaved so the cartridges don't hit the recoil shield when closing. By doing this the way your .455 was done allows you to shoot either .45 Colt or .455 Webley. Each of your chambers were also reamed to allow the longer Colt cartridge to fully insert.

The photo in post #8 shows Birmingham commercial proof marks dating from 1925 to 1954.
