This 44 Magnum, S187044, was shipped on December 5, 1958 to Carl Hellstrom, President of S&W, for presentation to General Curtis E. LeMay. This revolver and four others very similar to it, are the first 44 Magnums with this barrel length made (as far as we know) and are all presentation handguns. Another early 8 3/8 was shipped to Alvin White on December 11, 1958 and was engraved in early January 1959.

Those of you who are S&WCA members, know the "rest of the story" on the Persona Non Grata Club and the revolvers that celebrated it .

That is an absolutely beautiful Smith. I love the 8 3/8ths Smith N frame. Thanks for posting that beauty and HBD!

Saturday morning with a fresh cup of coffee and another Doc44 picture, gooood morning! And I did indeed enjoy the story in the S&WCA journal.Doc your pictures have always been great but have you changed something in the way that you take them, they appear even clearer and sharper than I remember.

Nice shot of an interesting revolver. The article mentioned was indeed a pleasure. Those gentlemen definitely had a sense of humor, which is something I see lacking in today's business world - at least what little I know of it. It's almost as if everyone is afraid to crack a joke, or let the other guy know he is, in fact, human. Mr. Hellstrom must have been a fun man to be around.

General LeMay was needlessly attacked, by the liberal media, late in his career. Anyone who has the interest can read about his earlier accomplishments - and realize he is one of those to whom those who have not "been there and done that" owe a great deal.

Gorgeous gun, with it's history it must be enormously valuable.

I'm not a collector and have no safe queens but that is not a gun I would ever consider shooting if it were mine.

Bill,
For thirty years I have owned #S184,782, an 8 3/8" Model 29. As far as I can tell, it is completely original with the correct barrel, coke bottle stocks and clamshell case with tools. I will letter this revolver and post pictures at a later date.
