Picked it up finally.

It's a Pre-28 Highway Patrolman, 5 screw, 6" barrel. Serial Number S1288XX. According to Allen-frame's " The ultimate Highway Patrolman" thread, it was manufactured/shipped between 1954 & 1955.
I also drove the 110 miles (ea. way), to pick it up, this morning. San Francisco was sure pretty this morning.
I have taken a couple of quick pics & will probably shoot it Friday.
Waddaya think?

Bruce

Very nice.

Have you taken the stocks off yet? Does it have a rather large hole drilled through the bottom of the grip frame, fairly near and parallel to the hole for the stock pin?

Yep -

And there is about a 1/4" hole thru the frame, near the stock pin.
What's that for/mean?

Nice early HP Bruce. Have fun shooting it.
My 5 screws all have the same hole in the butt frame.
Maybe they hung them on the assembly line thru that hole and then some cost cutter / money manager saved em a bunch of money by not drilling the hole and just hanging it through the real big hole

Thanks for the information, Bruce.

VM: Do other 5 screw frame sizes (like K-Frames) also have this hole?

My guess would be there was some kind of jig used at the factory that used this hole to precisely align the revolver for different machining operations. I'm sure someone here knows.

I don't remember such a hole on my only other 5 screw, a Brazilian Model of 1917. I'll have to check.

Yes - my K38 5 screw has similar hole. I dont think I've seen it on smaller frames

Weird -

Altho this is definitely a large hand-gun, the grips fit my hands better than any K frame Target grips will. It's real comfortable the way it is.
Nice change, most of my other Smiths have needed some type of grip mod for me to comfortably shoot them.
Should I want to change the grips out, to preserve them, what type would be the same size/fit and recommended?
Today's Fri., I'm going to the local indoor range with this one to try her out.
Thanks for the positive comments guys.

Bruce

Are they later grips? Mine do not have the speed-loader cut-out. Some previous owner ignorantly did other 'relief' work on the left grip.

FWIW, as discussed, the hole in the frame of early post war K&N frames are jig assembly holes. Brad
