I have been waiting to look at this gun for a couple of weeks now since my hunting partner called me and told me he had bought a model 19 that was 'kind of strange'. He read off the serial number to me and I almost swallowed my tongue, realizing it was an early one. I lied to him and said the number meant nothing to me but said I would evaluate it when we met for our next hunt. He knows almost nothing of Smiths but talked me out of a 2.5" 19-3 plus ammo last year which I have regretted losing. He thought it looked cool. So now he hunts for K frame .357s. This one is pretty unique. The caliber is repeated in the serial number: K260357. It is in fairly good shape, possibly having been refinished. The double action pull is not the smoothest and has him bothered. I saw my chance. I asked him why he thought it was a model 19 since it doesn't have the model number inside the yoke/crane area. That had bothered him also. I asked him why it has only 6 grooves on the backstrap when his slick little 19-3 has several more. This also bothered him. I lied to him and told him that any of the good, older guns were all 5 screws and this one only had 4, obviously a defect. He said it was too late to take it back so I offered him $25 less than he has in it with the promise that if I got it functioning better, I would consider selling it back to him. I am not sure exactly what he gave for it but he is tighter than a drum so I doubt if it was more than 3 or 4 bills. He is mulling it over. I snapped a quick pic when he dropped me off at my house. All numbers match except target stocks, including inside the ejector shroud.

wouldn't it be fun to buy it for a song, have it lettered and find out its from the first year of production, and then show him the letter?

(and then be a good sport and sell it back for what you got it for)

Sure I can.
We started hunting jackrabbits in 6th grade and he became a Winchester expert. When I was 20, he offered me $50 more than I had given for a model 42, .410, with a Cutts Compensator on it. He told me it was an aftermarket conversion and actually the gun wasn't worth the $250 I had given for it. I took him up on it when I got strapped for college cash. He had already run the serial number with a relative who worked for Winchester and knew it was one of the few originals with the Cutts. He still reminds me of that. So yeah, I can. He would expect me to.

Sounds like a legendary relationship...and on Christmas eve, no less. I'd say: go for it, but watch out for kharma whiplash; it appears that he's got you twice already. -S2

Sounds like payback to me. Go for it! You guys will get a laugh out of this deal just like you have on the Winchester deal. I got a high school buddy with a NIB model 28 from the 60's I am making plans for - I am bound to have something he wants...

Looks, indeed, like you (or your "friend") has a pre-Model 19 Combat Magnum manufactured in 1955, the first year they were produced.

Rather than OUT-SMARTING him, I'D HAVE to tell him he had found something worth holding on to!

Your should do the right thing...lie to him. In this instance it's a moral imperative. We're talking about getting even and it's a Combat Magnum as well.
