I picked up this 2nd model .44spl the other day. It has all matching numbers with only the slightest blueing loss at the muzzle and front cylinder edge with no indication of being refinished. Bore and charge holes are bright and shiny with no pits. Serial number is 201XX which indicates it was made in 1924. The walnut grips are in excellent condition with matching pencilled serial number. The lanyard loop is silvered out which I am told is normal. Have been looking for this model in really good condition for several years. One of the people in the gun club was short of cash so he sold it to me. Guess it shows that even a blind dog can find a kibble once in a while.`

Man thats nice. I have been on the hunt for awhile, still at it actually. I have decide however to get a Mod 24, with the 6.5", in the Classic series, in nickel. Lock be damned, I want one. You watch the minute I take delivery, I will find one. At a great deal no less. I guess I will have to get it also. The Mod 24 is not a HE 2nd mod, or even the real thing, HE fourth mod target, but close enough for now. It will be NIB, and I know I will ever see a NIB 2nd ,4th, HE in any mod for that matter. Oh well you did good and congrats on your find.

Nice gun.
I have a particular fondness for 44-2nd's in that style- back in the 70's, when I started fooling with old Smith's in earnest, that was about the only 44 Specials we ever saw down South. 2nd Mod's with non-medallion grips.
Usually overshadowed by the Mod 1926's nowadays- like a shroud makes it a "magic" thing. The shroud DOES make it heavier.......
You probably have a tiny eagle head in the yoke cut of that gun with a number under it, or perhaps a capital S???

I found mine by mistake, Wasent looking but it found me,
It is #235** and 1925,
Check out the football where the frame would normally flame cut,,, Neat huh, Supposed to prevent fouling of the cylinder action!
YOu will love shooting it! Great find!
Peter.

Yes, there is a capital S with the number 0278 to the right of it.
The more I see of the old revolver, the more I like it. Am hoping to take it to the range over the weekend and shoot it with light loads.

I have a 5" 2nd Model .44 from 1929. You'll love the way these shoot. Mine shoots the light loads (700FPS) OK but really shoots well with a stouter load. Group size shrunk by half going to a heavier load (850 FPS). I will say that the smaller grips are a little uncomfortable with the heavier loads.
That sure looks like a nice one.
