Having weathered a couple of cardiac events earlier in the year, and being well along the rehab path, I would like to reward myself with a Date of Birth piece (or something reasonably close). I am a shooter, not a collector, with a reasonably large aggregation/accumulation (won't call it a collection) of modern wheelguns. Not being wealthy, what would you all recommend from around 1940 that looks good, feels good, shoots good, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Partial to 38s and 22s, haven't tried a 32 yet, arthritis says no to magnums, plus cost of ammo is a factor. I may not do it, but right now I don't even know what to look at in that vintage.

If you're diligent you should be able to find a .38 M&P 4th change or a 38/200 British without breaking the bank. Don't get your heart set on a .22 though. The 22/32's are getting hard to find and the K-22 that was being made in 1940 was the 2nd model with prices well into thousands for a nice one.

+1 and look for the serial range of 680000 to around 700000. hopefully, someone can get a better handle on the serial range than what i have

More than a few K22 Outdoorsman letter well into 1940. I have one that letters in April 1940 and have read of others so they are out there. A much less expensive alternative to a 2nd model K22.

Contact Cornell Publications for a copy of a 1940 S&W catalog. I got a 1941 copy and am working on representative items from it.

Thanks for the link. I will have to settle for a '41 also, I don't see a 1940. Maybe I should drop back and settle for a high school anniversary model, a '58 something. Or 8th grade graduation, that was a pretty big deal, I already have a '54 S&W, a couple of them in fact. I think I'm just looking for an excuse to buy another revolver....
