I just found this today in Cabelas in Hamberg Pa.
It has a 6" barrel and all #s match, It's pretty dirty right now, And I didnt clean it before pics,
The ser. # is 364812.
Please tell me what I have here, It is in great condition, And it was 225. Does that sound about right?
OKAY enough talk, Here are two bad pics
Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Peter.

I looked through the S&W catalog and think it falls in the berkhart range?
The serial # is on the front grip strap as well as many other places, I am thinking it is not a k 22 outdoorsman,
WHAT DO I HAVE ?????
It is now all cleaned and working smooth as silk!
Peter.

Looks like a K-22 outdoorsman. Or the K-22 Masterpiece. However my book has been wrong in the the past. Just recently I might add. I am getting a 3rd Edition Std Catalog of S&W, just for this reaon. But that is my guess.

I agree with Cartouche, it looks like an early K-22. From what I can make of the rear sight, it looks like a 1st Model.

If the stated serial number of 364812 is correct, it can't be an Outdoorsman K-22. Maybe a .22/32.

It's a .22/32 Hand Ejector (.22/32 Heavy Frame Target). It's what the Bekeart evolved into. Those are extension stocks. I'll guess it was made in the 1920's.

You got a very good deal on that.

pred, s7wchad is correct. It's a .22/32 heavy frame target model, shipped in early 1922. Good buy for the price, however the grips are later replacements, as they are not numbered to the gun and have the 1930s style medalions, but are the correct rebated style for the gun.

Thank you all for the info!!!!
opoefc, How do you know it is from early 1922?
I found a couple on GB, and it seems like it's a 400$ Smith. I am amazed how small it is compared to a Pre. 17! I laid them out side by side, And WOW, I am anxious to shoot it!
This is what the "Guts" looked like when I opened her up,

Exerything was very stiff to say the least, But after cleaning all is really nice and crisp!
I wonder if anyone has ever been in there?
You guys are great here! Thank you all so very much for your expertise!
Anyone have any expirence shooting one of these old gems?
Peter.

As others have stated, it is a 22-32 heavy barrel target. What is uncommon and neat is that it is built on a Regulation Police frame.
I have 1 like it but nowhere as nice a finish. Great buy.

You found a really neat little 22/32. I think you will find it to be quite accurate and a lot of fun. If I am not mistaken, the 12 53 on the left grip frame in photo 3 means it was returned to the factory in Dec. 1953 for some kind of repair or rework.

Good eye, I think you're right.

pred,
Stay away from high-velocity .22's - use standard velocity only. Your gun doesn't have recessed chambers and a case head failure could be bad.

Pred, You can read up on these models in the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" 3rd edit., by Supica & Nahas and inthe book "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945" by Jinks, and other books. I knew the approx. early 1922 ship date for your gun, as the serial number is bracketed by the ser. numbers of similar guns shipped in that time period, as shown in my data base for Beleart models. The picture of the gun just above, shows the corect grips for a 1922 period gun. They have no medalions. 1919 to 1923-4 is a period when the grip frames for these guns changed as the Regulation Police model frames were phased into production, vs. the earlier style frames, with & w/o the rebated grip straps. The extended grip style , with the one grip screw for a rebated grip strap, replaced the earlier Target style extended grips with two screws, which came in either checkered walnut or black hard rubber.

I wish the folks at Cabelas in my state were as ignorant of values as the people who priced that gun...

Thank you all for the information, It is very informative! It is nice to have found a nice 22, I will use softer loads like target loads. It is not my oldest Smith, But I am glad to have found it!!!
Now I want the proper set of grips?!!! If I can find them!
I also think that I will check Cabelas more than once every 6 months!
Peter.
