I've seen lots of pictures on this forum of the 'fitz' specials, and I'm wondering what the reason is for cutting down the trigger guard so it doesn't guard the trigger. thanks

It was to allow you to grab the trigger without hindrance, for speed.

From what I read about John Fitzgerald, he was a salesman for Colt. Put on shows all over the country. He had the trigger guards cut away for his demonstations for speed shooting. Elmer Keith was in one of his shows. He said "Don't put me on with that cowboy, he's a snake with that single action".

Salesman - maybe incidentally. He was their top gunsmith during the 1920's and later head of their custom shop during the 1930's. Went to Camp Perry every year and would trigger jobs on your gun (either 1911 or revolver) while you waited. Also competed, and was known as a firearms trainer for both target shooting and various police departments, most notably the New York State police during the 1950's. Also an author, wrote "Shooting", while not an easy read it is one of the must have books for pistol shooters; containing many great hints and techniques that are still valid today.

Shooting might be a tough read, but it's a breeze compared to McGivern.

And a bit more practical as well IMO.
