There is a 6 1/2" Reg Mag with a HBH at the Cabelas in Fort Worth's Gun Library. Non original stocks, but the rest looks original, from a distance, anyway.

3900 is their asking and that is with one price drop already.

Here is a link.

Anyone buys it, please tell us all about it.

PZ,
That gun has been around the Cabelas Gun Room forever.
A decent gun, and probably fairly-priced.
If someone would get those gawdawful grips off the gun and spend some money on a decent set of anything made from a tree, the improvement would pay for itself AND move the gun.

Ahh, those grips. I was wondering if they were made of a hunk of the ultra rare plasticus tree.

Those plastic grips are Pointers by the W. Murad Co. and were very popular for a long time. Don't knock em till you try em.

Paul,
No question they're probably great for target shooting, but (IMHO) if that RM were in my store, it would have been 'dressed up' and sold at a price higher than where it is now, long ago!
Just my two cents worth...

The other thing is that the gun has a lot of muzzle wear, at the very least.

Who knows what the right grips are, for it ? If they are magna's, then there is
another $500 minimum. If the hammer is not original, then there some effort to find
another. And I don't know if that front sight is orignal to the gun.

As it is, without a letter, I think its a mixed bag. I note that, on the S&WCA site,
Bob Bettis has supplied the information, with a serial number of 57120. I don't know
if Bob has checked it out, or if he is only reporting what the gun is now.

Later, Mike Priwer

Bob and I talked about this gun while I was at Market Hall. I had seen it earlier in the week at the Ft Worth Cabela's. I wish I could remember what Bob said about it, hopefully he'll be along soon. I recall at the time I saw it, it was priced at $4995.

Don, we have to remember that the original owner was obviously a shooter and Mike has noted the "mixed bag" the gun represents.
That gun saw some honest use and I like it just the way it is. It speaks to me.

Yeah, DW. It speaks to me, too.

If I weren't buying a house, I'd have to put some real thought into it.

Still, just to see one live was a great feeling.

I noticed the muzzle wear, the two pencil eraser spots on the left side, under the cylinder release and the trigger shoe.

I don't know if the length isn't correct, but someone put some real thought into that revolver and I'll bet it shoots like a house afire.

Guys,
For that kind of money you get muzzle wear and lots of other usage signs
My point is, if you want to get into a Registered Magnum at a fairly low price, that gun offers an opportunity to do so.
If you're looking for no wear and pristine prewar magnas, go back to the bank

That gun has been there for months... over-priced for what it is... I'm pretty sure it is re-finished and stocks are not correct.

I would say it is something like a $2,000 to $2,500 gun ... so it is priced at about twice it's real value.

FWIW

To add to the refinish theory, I'm also noticing that there's no S/N stamped in the ejector rod shroud. Appears to have the letter 'O' where the S/N should be.

And maybe it's just me, but does anyone else think the roll mark on the left side of the barrel looks more like post-war letter/font size?

I looked at the gun well over a year ago. I believe that it was listed a little higher at that time. I thought that it was overpriced for the condition then. Since values have gone up and their price has come down, my assessment may not still be completely valid. If it had had the original grips, I'm sure that my feeling would have been different.

(DW, I also think the Murads are interesting grips but in this case, just seems a little like putting "curb feelers" on a Bentley )

The gun is serial number 57120, Reg. number 4311. I understand that it belonged to Jeffery Steer who was the Executive Editor of Guns & Ammo for many years. I also believe that Mr. Steer is now retired and living in the north Texas area.

If you will look closely, you will see that the gun has two small "dots" on the left side just below the cylinder latch where something has removed the finish. Otherwise, the gun has what I would consider normal wear and, as I recall, it didn't have any other serious problems.

I just spoke with a clerk named Frank at Cabela's to confirm my memory. I didn't ask him if they had any flexibility in their price but since it has been in inventory a while, they might. I did tell him that I might have "a friend" contact him.

If you are seriously interested, it might be worth discussing with him. It's certainly not a steal but the history might be worth developing.

Bob

I just read Mike's post and I do recall that it was almost $5K when I saw it. That was certainly overpriced.

Bob, curb feelers work just as well on a Cadillac as they do on a Dodge.

Bob,

I have bought a few guns from Cabella's in Ft. Worth... and found they would in fact deal to a greater or lesser extent...

It seemed to depend a lot on who was manager on duty that day as to how much they would deal...sometimes they were quite flexible sometimes less... and on the same gun on different days... so my advice would be if you don't get a price you like, try a few days later at a different time of day.... sort of like talking to the IRS... if you don't like the answer you get, try again... you probably will get a different answer.

FWIW

Chuck
