OK guys, I'm the newest kid on the block when it comes to these old warhorses. I bought a model 1905 HE, mentioned in another thread here:
http://tinyurl.com/29snwl

I have it now and as you can see, there are patches of rust where the nickle has flaked off and what is left is milky. Is it possible the MOP grips are original?

Would it be appropiate to use fine steel or bronze wool and gun oil to buff these patches of rust? I just can't stand to see rust on my guns!
The serial number on the butt is 137461 but the crane and frame underneath the crane is numbered 55352. I assume the butt number is the serial number?

The .32-20 must have been the hot-rod cartridge of it's day!

Dan,

I recommend degreasing the gun then going over it with Flitz polish. Take your time and be gentle. Eventually it will remove the rust and will improve the rest of the gun dramatically. Then coat it with microcrystalline wax, not oil or grease.

Regards,
Kevin

Is Flitz OK for nickled guns? Seems like I heard it wasn't good for electroplated items and I would assume that would apply here.

Trooperdan,
Kevin's right on...Flitz will do good things for your gun.
IMHO, Flitz belongs w/nickeled guns, not those that are blued.
Rennaissasnce wax is the microcrystalline stuff that will work very well.

Don't use any Hoppes 9 or any ammoniated cleaners or if you do make sure that you get it all washed away and that none get in the cracks and crevices of the nickel. Flitz does a good job.

The process I recommended is what the Colt custom shop and museum curators recommend. Flitz does have some ammonia compounds in it, which can attack copper. Early plating processes sometimes involved laying down a copper wash before the nickel to get better adhesion. However, if you remove all the Flitz when you are through polishing (degrease it again), then coat it with wax, I don't think there is any danger to the plating.

Question, would Mothers Mag polish work as good as Flitz on the old nickled guns? I have a 1 1/2 32 RF coming and it also has some rust spots which I feel sure will clean up.

Break-Free is ok to use. As was mentioned before,if you use Hoppe's,don't forget to wipe it all off.Otherwise,it makes the finish kinda"milky".

Are there any major chain stores that still carry Flitz? I tried Wal-mart, Auto-Zone and Lowe's without result.. found plenty on-line and ordered it that way. Sure would be lice to fine it locally thought.

I always seem to find Flitz at gun shows.

I've had good luck with Mother's Mag Polish (car store stuff) and a white Scotch-Brite pad. Takes all the scratches out, and leaves no residue that can't be wiped off. Finish off with the wax, and you're good to go. I've used Flitz and it's good too, but Mothers is tops in my book. JMHO, of course.
