Okay, so my two oldest S&W's are a K22 from 1948 and a four screw model 28 no dash from 1959. I'm not really eager to spend 60 bucks, but am thinking if I ever want these lettered I should think about doing it sooner than later. What say you?

I have only had one of my guns lettered, it did not have an exciting past. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me to see the cost of a letter going up in the future. If you are seriously considering, might as well jump now.

Cush,
sometimes the letters give a bit of interesting history.

Ummmmm, did you read the thread over in the Lounge where Mr. Roy Jinks related that when he is gone, there most likely will be no more letters available? There is no one to take over for him and S&W has shown no interest in continuing the service.
Colt now charges at least $150 for a letter on their old guns.
In just a decade, I bet many will be sorry they didn't spend the thirty bucks it takes to authenticate the exact shipping date of a S&W firearm. It's pretty interesting to confirm the grips, finish and barrel length as well as where the gun initially went.
The S&W letters from Mr. Jinks add value to guns today and will most certainly add value in the decades to come.
Sometimes we don't look to the future and just assume things will still be available.
I didn't get all my S&W's lettered at once, but they are all lettered now.
I did it while I still could....

mm6mm6, I did indeed read it, and that is why I'm considering it. Seems like now is the right time...

Each has to make their own decisions. I think a letter adds more to the value of an older gun than it costs. Secondly, they can turn up interesting provenance. Not often, but worth a shot. It's also nice to have a little history of the model to put with the gun. A real bargain IMHO.

Are you that bored with current events on the Forum that you had to pull up a thread that was 9 months old?
I'm sorry - I just couldn't help myself!
