Close. Fairly difficult to find. A 5 inch K38 Combat Masterpiece. The guns serial number places it very close to the Illinois S. P. shipment of which I have one. I just plucked this off of Gunbroker at what I consider a reasonable price. I don't think anyone realised that it is more than likely part of an overrun. Regardless, being a 5 incher counts for a lot.

Very nice. I saw it on GB also, but in the last photo it looks like a 6".

DW
Do the stocks # to the gun?
All that I have read that the
Isp guns all came with diamond
target stocks.

Nice one, DW. Never seen one of those, but hey, being naive I did not even know it existed.
Congrats on a good find, and enjoy.

DW,
Maybe it's the pics, but I don't see a taper in the barrel, which would make that a Masterpiece. They did do 5 inch versions of both the Masterpiece (pre-M14) and the Combat Masterpiece (pre-M15), and yours looks like the former, the difference being the barrel taper.
The ISP guns were Masterpiece models.
Nice snag, not sure what your scale is when it comes to rare, but that one fits up there in my book....

Spot on Rob. But the darn thing LOOKS like a CB. I've been refering to this particulare gun as a CBM for a few years. There was a mistake in the Second edition and I made it bible. The strange thing is, is that S&W has used the un-tapered target barrel on the model 15 in six and 8 3/8 barrel lengths. You'll think I'd learn.

Since your revolver has the straight walled barrel instead of the tapered barrel, it would technically be a Pre Podel 14, K38 Masterpiece. The Illinois gun in my collection has the straight walled barrel.

Missouri State highway Patrol had 5 inch Combat Masterpiece revolvers. The Missouri revolvers had the taper (at least the two or three I have seen had the taper).

In either case, the 5 inch K frame is one of the most sought after collector guns in the K frame models.

I own a very nice example of the pre-15 5inch barrel (tapered barrel} that a Jinks letter says was a Missouri Highway Patrol piece. If anyone wants to know S/N K15717x.
I have yet to figure out photos so take my word for it she is nice.
It is nice to see folks appreciate these old guns.

That's pretty nice. Congratulations. You'd probably look for the rest of you life and never find another one. If you do, let me know, I'll see if I can beat you out of it.

I'm betting there are more. Wouldn't surprise me if a distributor ordered some. That's a bunch of speculation on my part and only a letter will tell me that. I've heard of one more and the source is good. The best gun I ever found was the one I wasn't looking for.

Here is an older pic of my 5 incher. It now has diamond target. I have only seen a couple others. Thanks for showing us that fine revolver.

See. More. What's the first three digets of the serial number if you don't mind. It sure looks a lot better than mine.

D.W. congrats ,,saw that one too. Left you alone on it. Funds challenged right now anyway.

Something especially unique about the 5" K police guns. I lucked into an I.S.P. gun last year .K302808 ,stocks worn on the rt. outside like it had been holster worn for a long time.

Here is a side by side of the K-38 I.S.P. and a 14-2 Dayton for reference.

I have no idea. They are so hard to find, it seems that no one is able to get a fix on it. Mine was a gift from a friend who found it for me, and I never asked what he paid for it.
