Hello all, I need to know what I just bought, I am a avid S&W collector of the "newer" model numbered revolvers but today due to a rain out at work I stoped in the local money pit and in the used case they had what looked to me as a pre mod 10 with a 6" pencil barrel S&W on one side of barrel 38 spl on the other side, and the patent dates on the top of barrel. It is a 5 screw. The gun is absolutly beautiful with just a very slight blue loss at the end of the barrel, locks up nice and seems very tight, and hardly a turn line, looks to have been shot very little. The wood stocks are also mint. So whats a guy to do but buy it! I just dont see too many 5 screw guns in that condition for $400 + tax the serial # is 652xxx. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Sounds like a 1935 - 1936 .38 M&P . If its a square butt, then its
a 1905. Otherwise, its one of the misnamed 1902's. The grips should
have small silver medallions, and probably are not magna's . You might
add a few details about the butt configuration, and the grips. If the
gun is 95% or better, then the price is about right.

Yes it is a square butt and the grips have a silver medallion, I didnt take the grips off. Are they usually numbered to the gun? Thanks

Yes - the grips should be serial-numbered to the gun. By this time, the
grips should have the number stamped into them. Years earlier, they
were pencil-written.

That's nice. To nice. You'll have to send it to me so you don't feel guilty about owning and "older" gun. If that gun's not refinished you got a great deal.

Excellent! I can almost make out the type of camera you're using in the reflection off of that sideplate. Sweet!

The gun looks original, to me. I could be wrong, but it looks right. The fit of
the sideplate, from what I can see, is perfect. The two studs on the left side of
the frame look right. The color seems right, but photographs can be misleading.
The small logo, on the left side of the frame, is probably very deep, so I can't
be sure, from that. The gun does not look roundy, although the top rear of the
frame has a more rounded appearance than I would nominally expect.
But - all of this is just from those two pictures. Probably the best conclusion
would be that, from the two pictures, the gun looks right. Nothing stands out as
being an obvious indicator of a refinish.

That's just beautiful! M&P's are the classiest Smith's in my opinion and yours looks perfect. Gotta love it!

Just makes you wonder where it has been hiding all these years. WOW! That's pretty.

Thanks for the comments guy's, it sure is a beauty! It has not been refinished, just a hint of blue wear on the end of barrel and a couple small spots on the top by the rear sight probally from moving around in a sock drawer for the past 70+ years. Now I am on the hunt for the box, what kind should I be looking for? And what else would have came in the box? Thanks!

Good luck in your search. You will be looking for a one piece maroon box with a hinge along the back of it. It'll say .38 Military and Police on the end label. If it says "Target" on the label, send it to me, its mine.
What else came with it? Just a cleaning kit. A twisted wire brush and maybe a twisted wire mop. Those are impossible to find except in the original box. But few if anyone is smart enough to tell a more modern one.
My guess is that the box price will scare you to death. It'll cost as much as the gun.
