I don't have one myself, but have been on the look-out for one for a while. From what I have learned, the main thing to look out for are,

1) First, that it's a legit US Model Victory in 4" and not an obvious British Service model altered/faked
2) Proper placement, script and spacing on the top strap mark (see the photo in the SCSW, or else there's probably some on the web somewhere).
3) There is no source of a specific S/N database to be had.

Again, I've just studied up on it so I could be prepared - I'm not an expert on Victory variations.

Serial Number V1628XX.
The one in the photos above was issued to Aviation Machinist Mate Burton L. Morgan in Air Group 1, VT-1 on the WWII Carrier U.S.S. Bennington. He was the third crewman on a TBM Avenger. The holster is marked VT-1, Torpedo One and his name. Planes from the U.S.S. Bennington participated in the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato and also overflew the the surrender ceremonies on the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

Navy marked Victory SN V201294. M3 holster Navy marked. Lettered to Oakland, CA Naval base.
Have a US Property marked Victory SN V386400 that also letters to Oakland, CA Naval base so not all Navys are marked as such and SNs seem to be all over the place.

Hi TJ

I'm curious... does your letter actually say "Naval" Base, as the Oakland Army Base is also located at the same facility and received a lot of Army gear as well... Just curious how your letter actually reads... :-) Enjoy! Bob

Gentlemen:

In WW2 the US Navy operated a very large Naval Supply Depot at Oakland, California. Opened in December, 1941 the NSD was the initial destination for the great bulk of West Coast Navy Victory Model shipments from the factory. From there the Victories were distributed to various air squadrons, ships and other units authorized to have sidearms. The NSD closed in 1997.
