A friend has his Father's 5 screw 5" blue pre-27 F/S Ser.#S173083.Late'56 or early '57.Holster
wear and a patch of rust spots on the side under Cyc. latch in a circle of 1"+, rust under the horn and grip frame, misnumbered worn and chipped magnas. Say a 90% gun at best. Ser.# under extractor matches and the only other Ser. number on the gun. Realize without pics hard for you to say, but my best guess as to an offer, 500.00 tops. Belonged to a W.H. P.D. Officer who competed in B/E matches with fellow Officer Lucy Chambliss who shot B/E nationaly and Camp Perry. Opinions sought. Thanks, Brad

I would probably go higher than that, but you've seen the gun, I haven't.
I would have to see it, but $650 is my WAG for my top bid.

Thanks Jack,
I realize a pic is worth a thousand words, but I hope the description will do. Brad

Brad ,, are you sure it's a 5 screw? That ser# should possibly place it as a non model marked 4 screw.
Rust is the killer. All depending on how deep it is. If it's great mechanically and you could get it for $400?
I'd probably do it ,but I'm a sucker for orphans.
I guess there's three things that affect the value of a used Smith ,,condition ,condition ,and condition .
Good luck let us know how it turns out ,,Al

Allen,
Yes I know and share your suprise, it absoultely had all 4 sideplate screws. Suprised me as well but you know what they about S&W, nothing is written in stone. No endshake, 1 Cyc slightly out of time, other 5 just barely in.Butter smooth action, all in all, a bit of a mystery. Brad

That may be one of the very last 5 screw N frames, that's neat.
Good luck,, Al

Indeed I believe it is one of the last ones. The more I think about it the more I can see myself getting it. Anytime you want to come up let me know. I usually shoot at a public range called Tenoroc, nice place. Brad

Since it is a friend I would offer him $500 to $550 and enjoy it as a nice shooter. The 5" is a beautiful length on the 27.

Szuppo,
Based solely on condition, I presumed it to be in the 500.00 range. I think I'll start negoations there. Thanks, Brad

For what it's worth that would be a $400 to me.
Rust is rust and it's a killer. Wear to the blue W/O the rust and $500 would suit me. Rust present? Knocks it down at least a C note in my book.

Interesting that most of the suggested offer prices are so low. Everyone seems to focus on the rust, which I can understand is a real concern, especially if it is pretty deep into the metal.
For my part, I would still be willing to go higher. Focus on what it has going for it --
N-Frame and Pre-Model Numbers at that
5" Barrel
5 Screw
Buying from a friend, and it's history is known
Anyway, $650 is my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

Nah Brad, steal it from him for $400 or tell me where it is and I'll come up there and do it.
