MY S&W 1917 Military has a serial number of 162XXX. The SWSC #3 gives a serial number range of 1-209791 and a date range of 1917 -1946

Is there another source of information besides a letter to Mr Jinks that can provide a closed DOB?

Looks like 1919.

Do a web search for Springfield Research Service, if you want an alternative to Mr. Jinks, but also for a "fee".

I would still go with Mr. Jinks, as he might provide more detailed to what Ordinance Depot, warehouse, post the gun was shipped to.

Of course, many were just trucked from the OLD S&W Factory, to Springfield Armory-and that is where the "record" of where it went(but probably not overseas, as the war ended 11/11/18!)

Good Luck, and hope this helps a bit.

Bud
