Hi,
I inherited a new never fired 4inch barrell 38 S&W Police Regulation pistol with serial number 62XXX. I also have a brand new box of Peters Rustless 38 ammo box that was with it. The pistol has never been fired and stored in its original box since purchased. Can anyone give me an idea of its history and approximate value? I have attached some pictures as well. I also received a new in box Omega 22 model 100 and a S&W snub nosed 38 that is loaded by breaking the barrell, it is in a leather holster. Thanks in advance,
Alan

You need to do a search here on the forum, there is a ton of info on these that has been posted in the last year. Bceause its new in the box it will command top dollar for the model. I would guess in the $1500 to $2k range, hard to say since you just dont see guns this old in this unfired condition very often. If you wanted to sell it for top dollar in this poor market I would go with an auction site or one of the larger in house auctions like Rock Island Auction Company. Neat piece there!

Alan,
I commend you on your new gun(s) and your 1st post! What a beauty you have there. Thanks for the good pics - and do use the "find" function at the top of the page for more information on your S&Ws.
Regards,
Jerry

Thanks everyone for the kind help. For now I am just going to cherish the gift from my late grandfather and perhaps hand it down to my son at a much later date. I will use the search function and perhaps put together a package of information that I can place with the pistol for the next owner. Thanks again,
Alan

That is a very nice piece. Wish mine was in half as good condition. Sorry about your grandfather. Mine left me one too. Thanks for sharing those pics, Steve

Alan, welcome to the forum.
That is a handsome gun. Based on the serial number, this is post-war production and probably dates to the 1950-52 timeframe. If you have a bill of sale or know when it was orignally acquired, you may already know that.
This what is called an I-frame revolver. This model eventually became the Model 33 when S&W introduced the model numbering system in 1957.
I agree with Pontiaker that this is worth well north of a thousand dollars in this condition.

You truly have a nice prize there. I agree with the $1500 value or more because of the original box and abslotutely pristine condition. Information by Dave Wilson above is correct. These were 1st made in 1917 and differ little from yours except yours has the Improved hammer block safety, smaller ejection rod knob, different cylinder release latch shape, and the grip medalions & checkering border style.
