The way I figure anytime I can buy a decent revolver for $200 I'm doing something right. But I need help identifying what exactly the model is for this one. Last patent date on barrel in Dec 29, 1914. Serial # 404XXX. It's a .38 spcl. I know it's pre WW2. Other than that I'm lost.

It is the M&P .38 Special, Model of 1905, 4th Change.

I have the same gun, only a few numbers lower.
I've not lettered it but I guesstimate mine from around 1920 so yours is probably the same time frame, maybe 1921, 1922.

Grips on mine are identical to yours and I believe they are original.

Late teens or 1920 or so. Grips are not original- proper grips would be just like those WITHOUT medallions.
