Nice stocks, fellas. I have some Ropers and some Sandersons with thumb rests on some older Colts. I think they look very nice, tho to be honest I don't shoot one-handed ofen enough to know whether they help me any.

The other night I was perusing the book Shooting, by J. Henry FitzGerald, published 1930, and written by the Colt fellow of Fitz special fame, and noted that he comments that he doesn't like thumb rests. I was wondering whether he says that because he was writing before the development of good target shooting grips, or because he was mainly into those pocket snubbies with cutaway trigger guards for fast work (making target work superfluous), or just because he was an eccentric cranky guy. He makes the flat statement that anyone can get used to factory grips with practice and that they work fine.

(I've also read of shooters bloodying the web of their hands with service grips on large caliber revolvers back in the old days. Maybe Fitz was just an exceedingly tough fellow when it came to recoil!)

Anyway, regardless of functionality, I think sculpted thumb rests are beautiful.

Jerry, are you left handed, ambidextrous, or do you just like that first set up there? Is that style of thumb rest common?

Thumbrest stocks are really nice for "Bullseye" shooting. I found that they allow a stable relaxed grip for single handed shooting. Plus the increase in reach to the trigger along with a trigger shoe helped tame my tendency to pull to the left. For field carry I put on a standard pair of targets.

Personally, I think they are ugly as sin. They totally distort the lines
of the revolver. I don't ever recall seeing a picture of Ed McGivern using
them, nor do I recall a picture of Jerry Miculek using them.

They can be a great aid for traditional bullseye competition which is really what they were designed for. Appearance doesn't mean very much there, but some of the ones pictured here are sure great looking IMHO! McGivern and Miculek would be unlikely to use them because their their shooting needs are completely different.

Ed did use thumbrests. His "Special Grips for Special Reasons" by Kearsarge are shown in Section 30,the GENERAL SUMMING UP chapter of THE book.

Good shooting.

This is an original pair of N frame Ropers that I got at Tulsa a few years ago. Someone had removed the thumb rest. I sent them to Keith Brown for restoration and he replaced the thumbrest and matched the checkering. The wood he used was a perfect match. If I did not tell you they were repaired you would NEVER know.

I think they have there place on autoloaders but don't care for them on revolvers at all.

I know this thread is ten years old.
I can't shoot correctly without thumbrest grips : for this reason I litterally collect them. Of course I shoot one handed, I love bullseye shooting and I dislike combat-style . Your dad's grips are g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s !!!!!! they are Ropers, at the end. Congratulations. Maybe your father accepts a private "order"?

Yes, I like thumbrest grips but only for slow fire bullseye shooting. I seldom have them on any revolvers, as I find I still need to shift my hand to cock the hammer for timed and rapid fire. Mostly I have them on my semi auto's that I compete with.

This is my IZH 35 M I shoot in bullseye leagues.

The grips are made by Arnie Vitarbo, who specializes in target grips for International shooting and bullseye.

This is the IZH 46 M Air Pistol for 10 Meter competitions. I did a slight modification, but are basically original.

I also love thumbrest grips. Looks aren’t what’s important in shooting. For safe queens, it doesn’t matter.
I even have them on my 1911’s
Just wish there were more of the,
The Europeans value grips that are comfortable and improve shooting ability. Hence they’re very popular there. Nil and Morini etc are very nice, but you can spend about as much on grips as on the gun.

For the most part I don't.
This set is quite the exception though.
The thumbrest is a mini and I shoot better with them than any other grips tried to date.
I even like the look...............a lot

If I could get a pair for a left hander I would like them a lot better. I do like to use them when shooting with my off hand.

Nice looking grips. Anything to stabilize the gun helps. I use ergonomic grips on everything I shoot seriously (compete) including bullseye, international, airgun and even muzzle loading pistols.
Some think they're ugly, but to me any pistol that shoots accurately is beautiful.. Thumb rests are a huge help on one hand, offhand, dueling style shooting.. which is how real men (& women) shoot "pistols"

I like them because being left handed they are an excellent negotiating point for lowering the purchase price on a used firearm with RH grips.
