Gentlemen,a question. It's been a couple of weeks since i posted. i know, I know, I owe everyone pictures of my 38/44 and 1937 brazilian. My current question has to do with a model 10, s/n s928448, which has what I believe to be pre war checkered walnut service stocks with medallion (silver). It's at my favorite local gun (honey) hole and he wants $180.00. Yes, there is an issue with it. Someone has engraved there SSN on the left side of the frame near the cylinder release. It would strictly be a shooter, but if the grips are worth anything, I might throw the purchase on it. It has tight lockup and very little endplay. Thanks for your help.

I would buy the Mod 10 for $180 and try to polish/reduce the soc sec#'s visibility and re-blue. The grips would be a bonus and you get a good shooter.

trustno1,
I'm curious- how can you trust our replies?
Sounds like a borderline deal. It is a 38 M&P, which is what became the Model 10 about 10 yrs after this gun was made. If you want a cheap shooter, it will be a good one, having the long action.
Depending on the grip's condition, you might wind up being into it for $100 or less.
What barrel length is it?
BTW- that is a 1917 Brazilian.

Not that I've got 200 bucks to chase every "shootable" Smith that comes along, but how many of you see mechanically correct old Smiths even in bad finish condition that sell for less than 200? My experience has been that if it even looks shootable its "259.00" maybe 275 OTD no matter what it is. I've seen a few top breaks in pretty bad shape bringing less, but the gun shops I visit aren't selling the bargains anymore. Maybe the economic stimulus package will worsen the situation who knows? Regards, ~Chef
