Hello All,
we just came across an older pistol in my father in laws closet & would like some help identifying its prod. year & fair market value.
It is Nickel & has a 4 " barrell.....fixed sites.
Barrel says 38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG. Serial # is on butt of handle
2D76524 ......
I opened the cylinder & it says MOD. 10-5
it also says 32829 or 32S29 & B10

He was in the Air Force during Korea.....if that helps.

Thanks for any help

That's an interesting combination. The Model 10-5 was around 1962. The 10-6 came out later in the same year.(1962). The 2Dxxxxx serial range you've given is 1977. S&W didn't start putting model numbers on guns until around 1958, so his being a Korean War vet doesn't figure in at all.

Anybody here explain the the disparity in dates?

Not all that old in the scheme of things (31 years old) but for todays firearms (S&Ws) it is a wonderful year. It is a 1976-77 gun. A civilian model and not military (I would be surprised if it was). Apparently with the a lot of people here the 10-5 is one of the best model 10's out there by a recent poll, and I agree. The model 10-5 was introduced in the early 60's.
Keep it, shoot it and make sure folks know where it came from to keep your f-i-l's memory alive.

I'm just not up on the post war stuff. I thought when a "new" dash number came out it meant an engineering change and they stopped producing the older versions.
SCSW shows the -5 as starting in '62, followed later the same year by the -6. By 1977 they were up to the -7 and -8. Were they continuing to produce -5's all that time? Where have I gone astray?

-5 = engineering revision to standard model
-6 = same revision to the heavy barrel

They ran concurrently as distinct variants, only difference is the barrel type.

Confusing at first glance, and not quite consistent with other engineering change designations.

Value will depend upon three things:

1) % or original finish remaining, and other flaws to finish (nicks, scratches, peeling, etc), also, is it the original finish or a refinish?
2) Original grips still on the gun (they would be serial numbered inside the right panel to match the gun), and condition
3) Bore condition and general mechanical condition.

Barrel length doesn't matter so much here (it does with some models), but reasonable numbers were made then of each common length on the model 10, none were very rare. 2" bbls do get a premium, though.

All that said - let's say it has a really nice finish at 97%, no pitting or peeling, original grips in matching shape. I'd say $350 on a really good day at an auction, less at a show or shop trade-in.

That price is for a very, very nice model, and would go down for flaws, non-original grips, etc. email me a picture if you want and I can post it if you'd like more accurate commentary from others.
