I just picked up a s/w 6" in .22 long rifle and need a little help id'ing it. It has 1621 on the frame and the cylinder crane. Bottom of the barrel is marked 240086 which is also stamped on the cylinder. Under the grips on the right side is a "B" and a "0" stamped on the frame. It has some issues, the cylinder does not index all the way to the next chamber, maybe 90%, and the firing pin is broken. Also the rear site is missing a piece and a screw. Any help would be great. Thank you.

You have a pre war S&W 22-32 Target model. It has an "I" frame. Parts are sort of hard to come by. Rear sight leaf can be made out of some thin steel. The sight screws are tiny little things, don't know the thread pitch. I've had several of these thru the years, good little trail guns. I still have one, #245,xxx that I've used for years. Beat up but accurate. Might try the used parts houses for a bolt or hand.

That is a 22/32 target model built on the "I" frame; also known as the "Beakert" model from the dealer that first ordered these from S&W. From the gold medallions in the stocks I would guess this to be a pre-WWI gun; though I haven't seen very many of these guns I don't recall ever seeing one with smooth stocks before. Usually the outlined middle area of the grips is checkered with a smooth diamond shape left around the top screw. The serial number of 240086 should also be stamped on the front of the grip frame so that it is visible with the grips in place.
As you may have guessed from the age of the gun, it will be difficult finding parts or a gunsmith who is familiar with working on your gun.

225xxx shipped in September of 1915, and they phased out the gold medallions around 1920, so that pretty much brackets the ship date. I would guess towards the end of that range.
Except for the lack of checkering, the grips look right, so they are either very worn, or some one sanded them down.

I have one that was missing the rear sight blade. There is someone that hangs in the gunsmith section named jaybar. You could e-mail him. I think Jim used a ruger blade in this situation on his.
Its a neat little gun. Mine is re-blued and has a bbl bulge. It shoots good and I carry it when I hunt as a back up gun for a final shot on pheasants if needed. If I should happen to drop it, oh well, its just a beater. Larry

Thank you guys for the info. There is no serial number on the front of the grip frame. Looks like finding parts will be an adventure all its own.

I also have a couple of these, one is a Bekeart model I replaced the original bulged barrel with an early 4 inch target barrel and the other is a true 4 inch gun. Iam a knifemaker but also do some gunsmithing, mostly on old S&W,s, I can make the rear sight blade no problem. If you want me to fix it up for you let me know, my email is in my profile.Judging by the finish on the gun it looks like the checkering has just worn off the grips over the years from use...
