Recently got two letters from Mr. Jinks. One was an excellent history of my grandfather's .38 special HE M&P 2nd model.
The second letter was on a .22 HE 2nd model(ladysmith), shipped on 3/5/1906. The letter did not include the finish or type of grips when it left the factory(as did the .38 special mentioned previously)
The .22 appears to be nickel(much gone) with mop grips.
Shipped this way or not?

mt pockets,
I believe that if the mother of pearl grips are factory, they will probably have the medallions. If they don't they are most likely aftermarket. The factory was pretty strict about that and even went so far as to make an insert in the early boxes that stated:
"CAUTION As many inferior Pearl Stocks are fitted to our Revolvers after they have left our factory, it is necessary to caution the public in regard to them. These are thin, imperfect, ill-fitting, and in every way inferior to those supplied by us, and injure the appearance of the arm. In order to protect our reputatuon and the public it has become necessary to use our monogram trade-mark in the usual place in the stocks, as shown in above cut. This is inserted in gold or silver and is a guarantee of quality. SMITH & WESSON"

When you requested the letter, did you specifically mention the finish
and grips in your letter? Or did you just mention model and serial
number ?
Perhaps you know this , but if you don't mention all the specific
details, Roy will assume that it was a standard gun.

Thanks for all the responses. Grips do not have the medallions.
I did indicate in my request that the gun was nickle and had mop grips.

My LadySmith has mother-of-pearl grips with the medallion. They fit and look good, so I guess they are probably factory?

Jim
Only a factory letter will answer that question.
