I need some forum member knowledge to ID this S&W revolver.
Barrel is 5 inches, the rear sight is adjustable with a very thin sight blade and the sight ramp, flush with the frame and smooth.
Caliber is "38 S&W Special" stamped on the left side of barrel.
Serial #1164XX.
The rear sight has got to be one of the first adjustable with the front sight 1/2 inch high.

Probably a 1905 2nd change .38 M&P Target, about 1910. Grips would be right
for that date.

Mike, do you know what a revolver like is is valued at?
The bore and cylinder walls are perfect, no rust or pitting.
Don't want to sell, just wondering, this is a part of a group of guns, I inherited.
Also, would you shoot it?
I'm thinking about running a few rounds through it, some mild reloads anyway.

C

I can't tell about the finish, from the pictures. If its a 90% gun, with the blue isn good
condition, then its at least $1000, I would think. 5" targets are scarce - not rare, but
scarce.

From what I can tell, blue seems discolored. Maybe it needs a good cleaning - maybe its
been discolored from smoke , maybe its not discolored. The gun does not look refinished -
the fit of the sideplate is right, the sharp edges are still sharp, etc.

Here is a picture of a 4" 32-20 target, from about 1906. I have never seen another 4"
32-20 target. It was shipped to an individual, and I think it was a special order, as I recall.
Rare ? Maybe . Scarce - more than definitely. It has a lot of blue loss, and a lot of metal
wear. Dave Chicoine Jr worked it over, taking out most of the dents, etc, and then gave it
a factory refinish - which means not taking out the pits, and leaving the roll markings sharp.
I paid more than $1000 for this, not counting the mink coat for Daves mother.

Your gun, and this one, are not heat-treated steel, so light loads are the order of the day.
They were black powder guns. I personally would not shoot such an old gun - your is pushing the
century mark. Shoot something younger.

By the way - is Millstadt in So Ill ? My wife is from W Frankfort, about 30 miles south of
Mt Vernon.

Mike Priwer,

Everything on this gun is original, as far as I know.
Millstadt is about 13 miles east of the St. Louis Mo. riverfront, as the bird flys, still in God"s Country.

I'm fron St Louis. Years ago. More than years ago.

Is Millstadt anywhere around Belleville, or Cahokia ?

Are the roll markings on the top of the barrel complete ? The only thing that looked
a bit different was the significant setback of the front sight. If that barrel had been
cut, and the sight remounted, then the very front part of the roll markings would be
messed up. Also, and I can't tell for sure from the pictures, the taper of the barrel
looks a bit different. Its as though its too thick at the muzzle. Maybe its just the
picture.

Maybe we just need better pictures, with better light !

Here are three 32-20 targets, in 4", 5", and probably 6" . The 5" is a near mint gun, and
was shipped with two pair of grips; the checkered walnut, and pearl with gold medallions.

In that condition, the 5" s probably worth $2500 or so.
