Boy, what a catch that would have been. Any idea what it sold for? Whose name is on the backstrap?

The money was peeled out quick at the asking price of $3000

The name is a Doctor, H.E. B'Hymer MD

Yep, he'd have gotten $3000 of my cash mighty damn quick, too.
I went to a show today, most interesting thing was the seasoned peanuts. I passed up the Cajun spiced as I was really looking for cashews, but the guy wouldn't come off of $6 a bag for the vintage cashews so I walked. I'll probably kick myself this time next year for not buying 'em.

John,
Regarding the cashews...
"I feel your pain", as Klinton used to say.
Seems like there is more and more crud for sale at so many of the shows.
I'm beginning to wonder if I would be better off haunting garage sales instead of gun shows!
Anyway, that TL would, IMHO, have been an excellent buy at $ 3,000.
We just keep looking...
By the way, does the scoring on the trigger-face look different? Just curious.
Don

The backstrap says H E B'HYMER MD so looks like the old boy was medical doctor. If you GOOGLE that, you find all kinds of people.

IMHO, should have went with the cajun spice, but them again, I'm a little bias

Many, I'm up for about any food fixed Cajun style! I spent a few days in NOLA way back when and ate myself full of seafood. MMMMMMMM!

What a handsome specimen, indeed! I'm delighted to see the previous owner (s) had no reluctance to carry that piece. So often, presentation pieces that were engraved or highly embellished remained cased, or locked away in a safe. At best, they were displayed only for the appreciation of their owners or their guests. That TL was carried often and for quite long judging by it's finish condition. Overall, it boasts a good deal of character. Thanks for posting the photos....a real treat!

Powell and Clemmons was owned by Frank Hodges about 35 years ago. Frank is a past prez of OGCA and still sets up at all the meetings (this upcoming weekend at Wilmington, OH).

In my early working years I worked in downtown Cincinnati and would walk to the store to gaze in the windows at the great firearms. It was an upscale store, to say the least. I used to drool at the engraved Brownings and wonderful revolvers and automatics. I never bought from them because I was young, had a baby, and money was a bit tight (to say the least.) They were always pleasant folks, and figured that anyone as interested as I was might someday become a customer.

I seriously doubt that Frank or his wife still have any records.

Yes, its a great gun and I'd have been pealing $100s too. Thats a good lesson. Always bring enough along to land the great ones. Hesitate and all is lost.

Okay, that's it!

Since I got my C&R, I've gotta use it for that very instance.

I'll be traveling to AZ every weekend from now on with my C&R and some of my gun fund!

What a piece of S&W history! WOW!!!

Thanks for sharing.

Best,

Michael

I'm surprised the letter doesn't mention the name on the backstrap. Ever seen letters that mention personalized engraving, or do they just say engraving? Any question the name was engraved at the same time?

Great pictures too!

Can we ascertain who the engraver would have been there at the factory in this time frame? Or were there several? Just curious.

I just now noticed the checkered trigger. Aren't those rare, scarce, or whatever word you wanna use? Mr Jarrett?

Roger,
I think they qualify for the term rare. I have seen maybe a half dozen over the years. They definitely had to be ordered.
WHAT a gun. That has to be the find of the year.

Kobald_27, You forgot to read the "Rules of Engagement" for Calif. C&R holders when allowed to attend a Yuma, AZ, gun show. The fine print says: "All Junior Members, must submit any goodies found at the Show to a committee of Senior Members, for approval before permission is granted for purchase." This is for the benefit of said Junior Member to prevent any purchase of spurious merchandise, end expenditure of Learning Monies therefor. No charge is made for this beneficial service, however said Senior Members may decide to purchase said doubtful merchandise, in order to remove the temptation to purchase exhibited by a Junior Member, thereby saving said Junior Member from wrath of spouse when she discovers the rent money has already been spent.

This gun belonged to my Grandfather, Homer Ellsworth B'Hymer. I have a lot of background info about him that I will be glad to share with the owner. I just happened on this forum while doing some genealogy research on the family. I would love to see a photo of the gun. Does anyone know how to contact whoever purchased the gun to pass on my info about Dr. B'Hymer?
