She was a virgin, when I bought her. Only had factory test firing.
I deflowered her, happily.
Great shooter. She thinks she's a 4" Combat Masterpiece.
My phone camera made the bluing look uneven.
If I can find 'em, I'll post pics of my last year of production Colt Army Special .38. It's a former Detroit PD gun that someone chopped the barrel to about 3", bobbed the hammer spur, checkered the top of the hammer, and installed Colt MOP grips.
She has an issue with occasional misfires that fire on the second strike. I'm thinking perhaps the hammer was bobbed too much, resulting in too little mass.
Or maybe someone tweaked the mainspring to lighten the pull.
Whoever did this also made a new front sight for it. Blade type with serrations on the rear face of it.

The lighting is terrible.
But, you get the idea.
I got it cheap. Can't decide whether to keep it as a belly gun, or whether to replace the hammer, trigger, and barrel to make it a correct 5" DPD gun again.
Stocks would need to be replaced, unless I just want it to be a "pimp gun".
In a way, I'd like to contour the front sight, fix the misfire situation, replace the grips with some repops from Vintage, and keep it as a belly gun.
Barrel measures 2-29/32" long, from front face of cyl to muzzle.
Just under 2-15/16".
I think the misfire situation is probably because someone tweaked the hammer leg of the mainspring for a lighter pull.
It has a seriously sweet DA pull.
It also has push-off in SA.
It has an SA pull like a target gun.
The push-off is not an ideal situation, but I don't ever shoot it SA, anyway.
Thought about removing the SA sear surface to make it DAO.

I know what to do with it- fix the misfire problem and then....shoot it!!! It doesn't need anything else.

Agreed.
I bought it for three reasons.
One, it's a Colt in good enough mechanical shape.
Two, it was cheap. ($200 OTD)
Three, Someone else had already chopped it into a belly gun, ergo, I don't have to feel bad chopping one.
I've thought about having it re-nickled or maybe cerakoted or hard chromed.
First, fix misfire.
I think it's a spring issue, due to how light the DA pull is.
Don't know if I can tweak the leg to correct it, but I'd prefer to replace the spring.
just gotta find a new one.

Hello All!
I'm very glad that I found this thread on web! A stuff showed here by you is great!
Below, I'll show you my "belly gun". That's hardly modified cap and ball Colt Navy .36 cal. Short 2,5" barrel, rounded handle with quite polymer grips and lightly bobbed hammer for concealed carry.
I know, a purists gonna hate my for this, but modifications are made for my general comfort.

Hey, I too got a Colt Army Special relatively cheap. It was an impulse buy at an auction a few years back. The mother of pearl grips are not Colt (no medallion), and the nickel finish has seen better days. From the few times I've shot it, it seems pretty accurate and a good shooter. I use it as a house gun. I've been thinking about replacing the grips as the mother of pearl ones are slippery with sweaty hands.
Never thought about having it re-nickeled. That might make a real pretty gun! Any idea as to the cost of having something like that done? I don't have a clue.

John, you sure are. The full and proper serial number is stamped in the left hand grip frame. It's my understanding that this was done at the factory? This revolver would make a PERFECT car/road trip revolver, except I'm worried that I may get stopped by local L.E. who will only see an altered serial number, and not understand what can be a confusing law about re-serial numbering firearms. So this guy only gets the rare range trip, only.
I don't know why someone feels the need to plug a lanyard ring, when it's easy to remove the swivel and leave it at that?

I happened across this thread looking for something else, realized I have something to contribute:
When I bought this online it came out of a gun store in northern Idaho.
What I know about this gun is that it's just fantastic. Someone wanted a fast reloading belly gun in the 1940s, and decided to upgrade a Model 3 DA. The action is excellent, and and the modified hammer is a big improvement. I'm pretty sure all the factory did with it was a reblue, but someone could probably tell me if I am wrong there.
The Hammer modification + coming from as the shop owner told me 'An old guy who said he had it for years' in Northern Idaho leads me to think that it was worked over by Herb Bradley, who as near as I can find online was the guy who cooked up this firing pin arrangement, which was used by Christy Gunworks, and ultimately Ruger.
In any case, it's really at the top of my list for favorite guns. The Sandersons have been somewhat poorly fitted to the gun. Sometime I need to find the right woodworker to finish that work. Also, I figure someone shot it a bunch after most of the work was done and realized the square bit on the trigger guard was a problem, and had it rounded off, since that's not blued like the rest of the gun.

I don't mean to be a "nitpicker" but generally speaking, the modified big bore guns we had were capable of performing well beyond a distance of 15 feet and were carried in some sort of traditional scabbard. Sometimes perhaps, in an inside waistband holster like this one.
I concede that a particularly large man might find this IWB style practical and comfortable, but I imagine that would be an exception.
I like each and every one of the pieces that you guys have posted in this thread and I've posted my favorite of that breed several times before. So I won't bore you with having to download it again. Just thought I'd share that small insight with you all. The photos are very nice, thanks for sharing them.  |
Long ago I read where a NYC (?) detective carried a .45 cut down revolver
(.45 Colt caliber ?) loaded with a 300 grain bullet. Fact or fiction ?

My Colt's Agent "Belly Gun" with hammer spur and SA notch removed for
DAO. Craig Spegel extended boots. 2nd from left shows it in one of it's
favorite rides: A fairly rare vintage Baker Pancake strapless.
You may notice that the Agent barrel is 2" but the pancake is made for
a 3". Red Nichols pointed out to me that is a good thing because with
the cylinder mostly above the belt it would tend to tip out. The extra
inch length, to some extent, minimizes the tipping.
