was at my local gun shop today,he has for sale a revolver he has marked as a 1917.45 cal.it has a bright blue finish,5 and a half inch barrell, half moon front sight, square notch rear,un shrouded extractor rod, reads s&w d.a.45 on left side of barrell.they say serial number is 2686.that is the only number i noticed on inside of crane,it does not have correct stocks, they cover the bottom of the frame.i didnt check other barrell markings.i am going back weds.to check it out more and will have him remove stocks to get a better look.i would think it is a 5 screw.they want $500.00 for it.i will let you know anything else i find out.it is in 90% or so condition.thanks curt.

It's a WWI S&W model 1917. During WWI , there was a shortage of handguns and they couldn't make 1911s fast enough so Colt and Smith & Wesson chambered their large frame DA sixguns for the .45 ACP round. The Smiths were much nicer finished than the Colts , but both served well. Some were issued during WWII.

Sounds like the going price for a US 1917. Original grips and lanyard loop might run a few bucks to set things right.

Curt , if ya drop down one catagory , , to the 1857 to 1945 , and type 1917 in the FIND box , you'll get more info than you could ask for.

I had no idea they were worth that much. I took the wood stocks and lanyard loop off the one I got from my grandfather almost 30 years ago. I better keep an eye out for them in the garage...

Mine came from a family friend who was a test pilot for Lindbergh (no, he didn't get to fly the Spirit of St. Louis).

A military 1917 will have inspector and U.S. markings, a commercial will not. This one also has British proofs on the barrel, frame and cylinder (between the stop notches).

Note the flaming bomb ordinance mark in front of the hammer on the frame and the eagle head inspector (S2) mark in the yoke cut (below).

Note the serial number and eagle proof on barrel flat (below).
