I just picked up an older revolver and need help seeing just what I have. (Great time to check, eh?)

It is, I think an M&P 38 special. The 5" barrel is marked on the left side with "38 S&W Special & U.S. Service CTG's"

The top of the barrel has several patent dates, with the last one being Dec 17, 01

It has a round butt and appears to have hard rubber grips.

Serial number on the butt and on the barrel and the rear of the cylinder all match. It is 38xxx.

The gun has 4 side plate screws, and no screw in the front of the trigger guard, like other "5 screw" guns I have seen.

The gun is sound mechanically, with most of the finish as a grey patina. There is some bluing in protected areas.

Anything to help, namely year of manufacture would be greatly appreciated.

I can probaly get pics if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Mr. Big -

That's an M&P, and sounds like a Model of 1902 1st change with that barrel marking. Nice that it has the original grips. Book value is $150 for "fair" condition, which is what that sounds like. Year made likely 1903.
