papa,
It appears to be a prewar Outdoorsman's Revolver.
Can't do much of an 'appraisal' from the one photo.
If I were you, I'd certainly buy it, as the condition appears very nice.

That's my question, what is a decent price? I don't know too much about the pre-war stuff, but this one is nice.

As said, it's hard to do an apprasial on one picture, but if it is truely 95% original I would expect to see a price tag of $600 to $700 on it. Maybe more is some markets. Depends on regional values.

If it's a K-22 Outdoorsman from 1935, SCSW III says 600 for VG and 1000 for Exc. I wouldn't buy this if I were looking for something to shoot, because it looks to be too valuable. My two cents. -Donald

The seller could get his 800.00 on Gunbroker or Auctionarms, the price is not off base for what I've seen them go for on the auction sites.Do you want to shoot or collect?

Don't forget to ask the seller: For that price you have the box right?

Anybody notice that hammer ? Particularly the end of the tang ? Does that look right
to everyone ?
It appears to me that the end has been ground off, or something happened to it.
Is this just another photo characteristic that I do not understand ?

I had a model 10 that had been dropped at some time in its life and landed on the hammer and broke the tip off. It was ground cleanly like Lonnie's [IMO]

I would say so. It's definitely not a humpback and the other profile is as shown below:

Can I find a replacement hammer and if so, at what cost? I have a three day inspection, no questions asked, return policy with it. How much value is lost?
Thanks guys, I just don't know much about these pre-wars.......

How much under $800 did you get it for?
The gun looks to be real nice except for the hammer spur. Numrich lists K-22 hammers (different from M17 hammers) at around $55.00.
However I don't know if these are the same as pre-war K22's. Plus the hammer isn't always just a "drop-in" part. Hopefully someone here will have some suggestions.

OK, I put the gun on hold, pending investigation of the hammer. The hammer has some stamping on it like "RSD US Pat.Pend Of." I would say it had been changed from original. Anyone know what or where that hammer came from??

The thing about the hammer is - how did it happen to lose its end ? Usually
the reason is that the gun was dropped, and damaged the end, so someone
ground it off. IF that is what happened, then there is probably some more
damage, internally - like a bent pin, or stud, or whatever.
That stamping on the back of the hammer should not have RSD - I don't recognize
that, but perhaps that is not a factory hammer.
If it were me, I would pass on the gun. There are lots of K-22 Outdoorsman
for sale, from time to time. Get one that is right.

I would guess that it is "REG" as in "REG US Patent"

Hi papa; In MHO Mike's hawk eye just saved you about three bills , I'd have to want it pretty bad to go for 800 U.S.$.Just an an opinion from a guy that frequently gets the hots for a piece and tends to over look defects that any sane person would catch. Regards Bart

Just wondering if you can clarify the grips on these two photos. I thought that all Outdoorsmans (Outdoorsmen?!) had the smaller 'service' grips; but the bottom pic shows one with magnas.
The reason is I ask is my Outdoorsman (serial 6669XX) also has magnas: which until now I had assumed were non-originals.
Thanks!

Some of the late 1st models shipped with Magnas. My serial 6777xx, lettered as having them and it shipped in June of 1939.
Your serial, 6669xx, probably shipped late '37, early '38. A factory letter is the only way to be sure.

Mike is correct in stating that hammers are often ground on to correct drop-damage.
BUT, they were also often ground on because the owner wanted a different shape. Target shooters are notorious "tinkerers". This spur COULD have been ground merely because the owner had big, meaty hands, and the spur "bit" him when he fired double action. As I recall, Elmer Keith had to have the spurs on Target Hammers shortened, because they bit him.
