I have a premodel 10 postwar with serial S988xxx that has a 6" barrel and numbers match including grips. Is this anything special or just a run of the mill M&P? It has a rounded hammer spur and the half moon front sight.I would call it 90% with some nicks and rubs on the cylinder and left side end of the barrel.

I have serial# S 988536, 6" blued with numbered grips.
I don't think there's anything "special" about them but yours in nickel is a bit scarcer, as S&W made fewer nickeled guns than blued guns.

Jaycee, thanks for the input. The serial is actually S989621. Does this put it about 1947-8 time period?

Probably. I haven't lettered mine and don't know an exact date, but I also have S 962592 which was shipped Dec 16, 1947. Nahas and Supica's Standard Catalog of S&W 3d. Ed., says that the "C" serial number range began in March, 1948, so it's a pretty safe bet yours was made between the end of WWII and March, 1948. SCSW also says that post-war production began at about S 800,000 and ran through about S 990,000 before the introduction of the short-action so yours is probably towards the later time frame.
If you don't have it, the SCSW 3d. Ed. is a great reference source and has a lot of info on the Model 10 and it's predecessors.
