I have been offered a 4" Reg & Police in .38 with a serial number C 1510xx. It is in 80% condition. Does anyone know when it was produced and approximate value?

Not to be picky, but the model name of this revolver is "Regulation Police" not "Regulation and Police."

hey revolver time is your revolver a 4 screw or a 3 screw? in 1957 the 38 regulation police continued as the model 33 so if it is a 4 screw on the Improved I frame it would be 53 to 56 if it is a 3 screw it would be 56. I just paid 320 out the door for one that is about the same condition. Are the stocks orginal to the gun? I don't know if my price was great or not, but I'm happy with it so I guess that is all that counts. Hope this helps. Larry

Boneman, the Regulation Police I am looking at is a three screw. It has diamond service grips but the barrel is marked .38 SPL ctg. I thought these were all 38 S+W.

So did I. Can you post pictures? If it's a .38 special, are you sure you don't have either a S&W Military & Police or a Colt Police Positive?

They were building them on the slightly longer J frame to accomadate 38 spcl and the Regulation police markings were deleted as existing stock was used so this might very well be what you are looking at.I'm guessing 56 57 the serial number range was 54475 122678. Hope this helps. Larry

Sounds like you have a .38 Special Military and Police, the Reg. Police did not have a C in the Ser.# and fired .32S&W or .38 S&W, not .38 Special. Also the M&P were K-frame 6 shot and the RP were I frame 5 shot.

The Regulation Police was NEVER made in 38 Special.
Brad is correct- if the serial number has a "C" in it, you are looking at a 38 Military & Police on the K frame. C 1510XX should be a 5 screw gun from the early 50's.

Some time ago, I asked the forum to help identify a revolver. I had improper information on it at the time. The correct information is S/N c 1510xx, diamond service grips, .38 S and W SPL ctg stamped on its 4 " barrel. The & is the lazy one on its side. The frame has 4 screws and another screw at the front of the trigger guard. The finish is at 80% and is a flat blue like on the Model 28s. The dealer has $249 on it. What model is this thing and is it worth the asking price?
Thanks

It's definitely a .38 Military & Police aka pre-Model 10. IMHO $250 is a very fair price for a 4"-barrel shooter-grade 4-screw pre-M10; it's not an absolute steal, but I'd jump on it.

The way I read the recent post, this is a 5 Screw. Still well worth the $$$, maybe more so.

The .38 caliber Regulation Police are 5 shots. The .38 caliber Military & Police are 6 shots.

You know, looking at photos, it is a crying shame that S&W didn't make the Chiefs Special/Model 36 with a 4 inch barrel. What a Kit Gun that could have made!

They could have called it the 38/32 HD Kit Gun!
