I have a .22/32 "I" frame S&W 6" adjustable rear sight, blue, round butt 6 shot revolver, serial # 4277xx. The serial numbers match on the barrel, cylinder and front grip strap of the frame. The grips do not appear to be correct. While the frame appears to possibly have been re-blued (the hammer & trigger are blued), the barrel appears original and marked "22 long rifle ctg". The last patent date on the barrel is "Sept.14,09" with the first date being "March 27,84". The is a small "B" on the bottom of the right side of the frame under the grip.
I am looking for information about the correct model, age and value. Thanks for your help.

It's a pre-model 35, the 22/32 target model. The correct grips would be the "extended" target grips that have a second grip screw.

The rear sight looks unusual, too. If click-adjustable, it may have been replaced with a post-war j-frame sight(hard to tell from the photos, but I'm somewhat sensitive to 22/32 rear sights 'cause I've been looking for one for my own 22/32 boat anchor for several years). SCSW3 says sn's for 22/32's reached 384xxx in 1923 and stopped at 536684 in 1941. I agree with your opinion that the gun has been refinished. Here's what the stocks on an earlier one should look like:
Regarding value, I've seen a pristine, post-war I-frame 22/32 go for $1150 and really nice pre-war 22/32's go for around $700 (..who can explain that?). I paid around $125 for my old boat anchor a few years ago; purchased as a project gun. -S2

Hey, Wolf Catcher
This is a real 'oldie', from 1917, but you'll get a real good indication of the extended factory grips.
The correct grips for your gun would have no medallion if they were pre-1929, +/-, and silver medallions after circa 1929.

Thanks DHENRY, that looks like it and yours is a really nice S&W. Do you have any pics with the grips removed? That is what is getting me -- the rear of the frame does not look right as a round butt. The books that I checked said that it should have a square butt but the grips are the same as a "J" frame round butt.
Thanks again.

Thanks for posting the sight photos, wolf. I've never seen another like that one. It's condition is consistent with the overall gun, so I could believe that it's either original or a correct period upgrade. Perhaps one of the antique gurus here will enlighten us on it. -S2

Here is a picture of a 22/32 shipped in 1915.
With grip removed
The whole thing.
Sorry I don't have a closeup of the rear sight. the base is similar to yours, but the actual sight is much smaller and more delicate. This will give you a good idea:

Thanks dinghysailer, Your pictures shows it all. I just could not understand why the books said a square butt when the "J" frame round butt grips fit perfectly. Thanks to all for the help.
