How EXACTLY does the wording on the barrel of a revolver differ between .38 Special and .38 S&W? In other words, what would it say on the barrel of each?

Typically, .38 S&W (British .38-200) barrels say '.38 S&W CTG'.
.38 Special roll marks say '.38 S&W Special CTG' or '.38 S&W SPL CTG'.
CTG of course stands for 'Cartridge'.
Some of the very early pre-1905s also say 'or US Military Cartridge' meaning that they will also shoot the shorter .38 Long Colt round (as any .38 Special chamber will.

Chris's answer is 100% corrct for Smith & Wessons. This being a S&W Forum, I'm assuming your question was about S&W firearms, however for other US and foreign makers, the markings of caliber can come in all kinds of variations and the answers would be too lengthy to post here. Should you encounter a specific non S&W and have a question on the caliber stampings, post the make & model here and I will give you my opinion. Ed.
