Lowhog: the Call Bead on your gun doesn't protrude either. So I guess the one my friend has is "normal". I thought maybe it had been filed down a bit or something but could not see how because there were no traces of anything having been done on the front face of the sight.

So now I know. Those are both gorgeous revolvers!

Every call bead I have seen has been flush. McGivern sight bead sticks out. See If I can find a picture here in my inventory. Here you go. McGivern.pix155532202.jpg

This thread has been a most enjoyable read. Many thanks to Calmex and all those who have posted here.

A special thanks to Calmex for protecting a true piece of American history and sharing his personal friendship with Col. Roettinger.

I have never visited the cemetery here in San Miguel although I had heard a number of times that there was a special section for the foreign community. Now I guess I'll have to go and have a look. This evening a friend brought in his IPhone and showed me this photo he had taken over the last weekend. This would be the grave of the former American Consul Phil Maher talked about a number of times during this thread and who died almost 9 years ago now.

I do not know if Phil Roettinger is buried in this cemetery but I will have to go over there now and have a look-see. Maybe Roettinger is there too. I don't know but will go find out when I get a chance.

Default Phil's Colt Detective Special

This Colt Detective Special was presented to Phil Roettinger by the President of Colt Firearms when Phil finished his "training course" of work experience at the Colt Plant sometime before he came down here to open up his Mexican Firearms Business in Mexico City where some off-the-books items were made for C.I.A. use. He always showed it to me with such pride and at the time that he owned it there wasn't even a turn-ring as he had the hammer zip-tied in place. Although I have Phil's NRM, I have never been asked about it by any of Phil's old pals down here but I have been asked "did he ever show you his Detective Special?" so I guess he esteemed it enough to show it off to others and not just to me.

When Phil passed away, this gun went to Colonel Phil Maher who left it when he became ill to a local Doctor, gun enthusiast, (and former San Miguel Mayor) who is a good friend of my own also. Although I have seen the D.S. many times since I never happened to have a camera with me. Last weekend I went over to Doc's to look at some old Mexican Revolution-type guns that a patient had asked the Doc to sell for her just to see if there was anything worthwhile in the pickings so I took my camera and asked Doc if I could photograph Phil's D.S. .

Here it is, as it sits now which is pretty much the same as it was when Phil had it except that Doc has shot it since it fell into his care. But it has a good home, believe me. A beautiful D.S., and Doc is delighted to own it for sure.

And now, the flip-side. Yes, I believe the Pachmayr grip adapter was mounted on it by Phil, not by Doc.

Thank you very much, Bisley.

I will be adding some more material soon, it's just that the kids are still out of school and the Ice Cream business is taking up all my time.

- I still intend to go check out the Foreign Cemetery area to see if Phil Roettinger is there. I really do not know.

- There is a small monument not far from my store with Phil Maher and Phil Roettinger's daughter Susan sort of memorialized in brass/bronze I'd like to photograph as well.

- A heretofore unknown RM has fallen majestically into the hands of a friend of mine. It will be stopping by for a visit and the obligatory photo of it and Phil's together on the Iquipali chair on my back patio. Barrel length is a rarity and it appears untampered with. Serial number, if I remember correctly, is 51115 and I don't remember the RM number. This will be labelled under "coming soon" because once the kids go back to school next week, life will probably get back to normal.

I am glad you have enjoyed the thread so far, Bisley.

Just to tag along with the Phil Roettinger story, here's a painting I secured that he did, acquired with the help of Calmex, now it's in my lounge room.

Picking up a package at a bordertown motel, dropped off and left with a first name recipient, absolutely reeked of contrabanda!
But at least I didn't have to swim it across the Rio Bravo during a rainstorm in the dark of the moon.

Give us a chance, we're still getting this cross-border shipping thing tweaked out. Don't sell those water-wings just yet.

Blast from the past photo time. With this thread sitting here in front of me, some photos just arrived the other day from friend Michael French who was going through an old hard-drive. These were taken about 13 years ago, just after Phil Roettinger died on the old SMAGTO range. Some of the founders of our current SMAGTO IPSC Club.

From left to right, Aurelio (if this Club was the Sons of Anarchy, he's our "Tig"), Phil Maher with his S&W 669, Erika -- probably the First Lady of Mexican Practical Shooting and Michael's wife -- and Doc, the owner of the Colt Detective Special posted above. Doc's a former mayor of San Miguel and still politically active enough to help the Club squash any stupid local political moves against it. Doc and Phil Maher were close friends.

Erika with Phil Maher's 669. Phil's moving quickly to bring her more of his shells to shoot off. Phil used to drive up to the border and stock up his trunk with necessities. We always used to laugh that the Colonel brought down all that ammo and then let Erika weedle it out of him. But he liked it I think. He was very fond of Erika even though she tends to rule the World around her with an iron fist. Some members say she defines "over-domineering" but I think they take her too seriously. Phil Maher used to dote on her. She ended up with several of his guns when he died and those guns are around to this day.

We have no photos of Phil Roettinger. It's amazing to me that these appeared. We were so busy having fun we rarely stopped to photograph ourselves. I'm glad Michael sent me these, I was probably there the day they were taken.

Another close friend found himself an RM that had been forgotten in time. 51115 appeared just recently in carefully guarded emails sent out to members of the Mexican shooting community. The owner wanted the peso equivilent of 1,000.00 U.S. at the time and a close friend of mine -- who has read this thread -- decided he wanted it. We put things in motion and in small steps and careful manuevers 51115 left it's home and made the journey overland through Police and Military traffic stops to my friend's gunsafe.

He brought it by the other day for a short visit with Phil's, and it will be coming by again soon so we can take some better photos of it. Barrel length is 7 3/8 inches it appears and it is just superb in terms of action and pre-timing. The front sight is a Gold Bead. It has a registration number but I forgot to note it down since I'll see it again soon anyway.

I will write it up in a separate thread as "Another friend comes to visit". Consider this just a teaser.

Maybe I need glasses but probably I just needed to see the thing in better light. My friend did not get 51115, he got 51113.

Reg. No. 2066. I will write it up this afternoon in a separate thread. Sorry about the mistake.

Default Update!

Well, the situation in Central Mexico is interesting. The gas pipelines got shut down to combat fuel theft causing a gasoline shortage in the center of the country centered around Salamanca, Guanajuato about 4 weeks ago. Lots of action and fireworks started in that area immediately. So my wife and I flew in about 3 weeks ago.

We have been back in Canada for almost 3 years now fixing up some things that needed to be fixed with the old Pension Plan. I have about 3 more years to go on that. Living back in the 1st World (is it really?) after 26 years in Bananaland is a real slap of reality, and not necessarily for the best. But it is certainly different.

So! What about Phil's gun? I have been rather busy doing some Dental work and stuff (I trust Mexican Doctors more because that's the ones I know after so many years here) and there have been shoot-outs on the local highways that make one think before commuting. Still, a quick visit to my old haunts needed to happen, I had too many friends and contacts I just had to check in with. I saw a lot in just a few days, before coming back here to Salamanca. Many, many old friends and employees and it was a totally 100% positive experience and visit for myself and the wife.

Phil's house, where he lived on the hill, is being torn down!!! I was shocked! As I passed by in the Taxi, I just had to wonder if the person who had purchased the house even knew the history of the house? Or cared? It was a beautiful house, but maybe not modern enough? It should have been declared a National Historic Monument in my opinion, but these days there a lot of people out there that would deliberately destroy the house of a CIA Patriot just out of spite.

I did not get time to visit Phil Maher's grave. (Roettinger was cremated and I do not know where his ashes are.) I see they have a bust of Phil Maher in a small plaza across from the Hotel Real de Minas -- along with Susan Roettinger, Phil's daughter who worked for years for the local Red Cross -- but I did not have my Cel with me to snap pictures of that. Next year I will visit longer and get those shots for this record.

Now, how is Phil's gun? It is in a very, VERY safe place, and is in perfect condition, exactly as I left it. Here is a photo, with a February 14, 2019 Mexican Newspaper as a background.

It just looks great! I was very happy, because I have not been there to care for it, and sometimes Quasimodo confuses himself easily. But all was fine.

While I was there, I made sure that some of the nice guns I am holding for friends to pick up (it is tough to co-ordinate with me to meet up now that I don't live there full-time, and I get that). I think I have posted them in other Posts, but they are doing well!

This R.M.:

And this classic:

All in the shape I left them in. Great job, Quasimodo! All is well with the World, even if it really isn't.

Thanks, Onomea. I would not describe my self so much as thriving as just surviving. But I am planning a return to Mexico in a couple years and will be coming back with a bit more financing behind me than the first quarter-century provided.

Phil's gun is still aging very well and is in exactly the same shape I left it in. Although people can tell one pleasant things on the phone, I still was very relieved to see the gun with my own eyes.

Default Restored to living color!

I am sure other people than just myself have had the experience of their "image hosting site" just suddenly disappearing altogether (Image Cave) or suddenly wanting cash-up-front for you to use their hosting service to post your images. In my case, having to move back to Canada in 2016 to finish up some work requirements to be able to get a retirement income sort of discombobulated my ability to keep up with my own pictures.

I had everything stored on USB thingies and only this weekend, after 3 and a half years (with only 3 years left to go up here!) was I able to dive in and save all the images I had that were pertinent to this thread to another image hosting site.

I have now been able to restore all the images that were my own -- and since Phil's revolver is mine and I'm the only one who has easy access to it excepting the person "taking care of it in my absence" -- I pretty much had to restore all those original images. Fortunately I found all the images on my backup USB's although in one case I did replace an image in the middle of the thread with a more updated one, and it was not an image of Phil's revolver.

I should be back in Mexico for a one-month visit (I cannot stand being here in the People's Republic of Canada but suffer through I must. A one month reprieve every year certainly helps and anyway Mexico is very turbulent right now so what better time to be away?). I of course want to visit and "check up" on Phil's gun while I am down there and will post a photo or two when I am there if I am able to get over and see it.

I wanted this thread cleaned up as much as possible before I have something newer to add and this was a good weekend to do it. My latest information on the Penultimate Magnum is that all is well. But of course, I want to go and check if I get the chance. Lots of action and excitement taking place all around where this gun is stored -- but it's not the first time this revolver has been in the midst of lots of action and excitement.

This is the last photo I took of Phil's gun in February of this year, and I see I did not post it. It will have to do until February or March of 2020.

Cheers!

Glad to see you post again. Kinda fitting to post the picture on the 244th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

Oh, I'm still around. It's just, living in Canada is NOTHING like living in Mexico. So I have nothing to report, and so I don't post much. But I am over half-way through this suffrage and as I said: Mexico is going through a lot of turbulence right now. It's a good time to be away but the weather is dreadful and I'm in the warmest part of the country.

Now that I have my images back, I might post a little more. Believe me, it took a while to redo everything off of the USB drives. If you ever need to move and leave everything behind, back up all your photos. It takes a good while to resort them all, but at least you keep them! I'm sure glad I did.

Nice to hear from you again, too!

Yes, it is good to see you posting again. It is funny that you just end up either north or south of the US and in countries with different handgun restrictions. This should be a heads up to all of us that we could easily lose more of the rights to access to arms. I'm glad you have been able to hang on to your personal arms. Cooper said personal arms were not just property to be bought or sold according to your financial ups and downs.

I would find it difficult to relax if I were to live in Mexico and not have some firearms. Especially my Model 49 snubby, which tends to be close at hand most of the time. Here in Canada, all I have are a couple of replica Pietta Peacemakers, but I love them just the same. But one needs personal arms. That's beyond any doubt or argument from me.

I find it fortunate that many U.S. handgun mfg are offering 4.2'' bbls on many of their offerings for the Canadian mkt. I do find it unhandy to not be able to have a snub for SD. Anyway I'm glad you are posting more It is good to have your input on the forum.....

Canada right now has some pretty rotten restrictions on guns -- like you say, any handgun barrel under 4.2 inches is prohibited and you can't buy one or get a permit to take one shooting. And now, the Liberal lefty Government wants to ban handguns and semi-auto rifles altogether. Sad.

If you were to be caught illegally carrying a restricted handgun in Canada -- even if it was registered to you -- you'd probably end up with a criminal record and maybe jailtime. In Mexico, if you get caught illegally carrying a registered restricted weapon (and it is registered to you) you will have a bit of trouble but unless you threatened somebody you'll probably squeak out of it charged with a misdomeaner if not just a stern warning. You may or may not have to "pay a fine" to get the firearm back. Seriously.

In the State of Guanajuato right now, if someone breaks into your house and you shoot them, you "cannot be charged" under the law. (And that is how the Law words it.) I have a friend who fired at -- and missed -- a bad guy who broke into his house and who fled when fired upon. The Police came, took a report and asked my friend if his revolver was registered. When he told them that it was and showed them the registration, they went on their way and that was it.

You just try that in Canada. They'll hang you out to dry and then go see if they can search up the robber who was fired on so the Government can apologize to him and cry some crocodile tears for the News cameras.

Mexico may be a mess right now but I am counting the days until I can get back there. Canada -- like so many countries around the World right now -- seems determined to once again relearn lessons the hard way that were learned the first time the hard way, all the time virtue signalling to each other about how noble they are as they do it.

Default Moved to new location.

Hmmm, I forgot to update this I see. I was in Central Mexico for most of February and early March. When we got back to Canada, everything was being closed down and I was lucky enough that my box store stayed open.

Anyway, while in Mexico, I had some interesting times but one of the big developments is that the place where I was storing Phil's NRM suddenly and overnight became "insecure" due to a marraige dispute. Thank heavens I was actually in Mexico when it happened and was able to go and pick up the four revolvers I was storing in that place: Phil's NRM and my Heavy Duty, plus a long-barreled RM that I am holding for a friend and an old Model 3. My wife had been imploring me (nagging?) me to move the guns anyway, just based on what I considered to be unfounded rumors -- but it turns out she was correct.

So, the guns are moved and in a new "safe location". I snapped this photo of Phil's revolver and the Heavy Duty after carrying them all across the whole town in my laptop bag. They have a new, quiet safe home in a nice big climate-controlled safe in a secure area with a trusted and reliable caretaker.

So all is well. But with the whole pandemic thing starting pretty much the instant I got back from Mex, I never got around to mentioning that Phil's gun has been revisited and is in the same shape I left it. Only 2.5 more years and I'll be back there fulltime, and Phil's gun will once more be under my constant care. Man, I would have gone totally ape if I'd been stuck up in Canada knowing that suddenly my old "secure storage location" had suddenly been violated. Stuff happens!

Due to the travel restrictions being imposed right now, I won't be getting to visit Mexico this winter. I was talking to my friend who is storing Phil's gun just Monday morning and he assures me "all is well". So there won't be any new photos until I get back down there. Probably a year from now, in February, 2022.

The wife and I plan to return to Mexico (to live, once again) in early 2023. So Phil's gun and I just have to wait a bit longer to be reunited once again.

I've spent a lot of any free time I had since November reading up on some of the excellent books that have come out recently about the Pacific War. Remember, I'm back in Canada right now and they have this thing called winter. After 26 years in Mexico I do not handle it well. Anyway, several of the books I have read recently touched on the Bouganville campaign and I am amazed that Phil's gun looks so good after having been carried through an island battle where it rained so much of the time that everything was basically rotting. He must have taken a lot of trouble to take care of the Magnum. I wish I had read these books earlier (but of course, they are recent and I could not have done so). Had I known more about the topic at the time, I would have been able to ask him better questions. Darn it.

For people interested in the names of the books -- and I liked them all, they are Military History -- not fiction. These are not in any particular order of preference, just the order in which I find them on my Kindle:

World War II at Sea: A Global History by Craig L. Symonds.
Voices of the Pacific by Adam Makos
The Fleet at Flood Tide by James D. Hornfischer
Tarawa by Robert Sherrod
One Square Mile of Hell by John Wukovits

and the absolutely excellent "Pacific War Trilogy" by Ian W. Toll
Pacific Crucible - War at Sea in the Pacific 1941-1942
The Conquering Tide - War in the Pacific Islands 1942-1944
Twilight of the Gods - War in the Western Pacific 1944-1945

and also:
Shattered Sword - The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway
Descent into Darkness by Edward Raymer
The Battle of Midway by Craig L. Symonds

These were all excellent reads, or are excellent reading as I am just finishing the first one mentioned. If the Pacific War interests you at all these will not disappoint you.

Cheers to all, stay safe and healthy.

Hi Curtis! It's just incredible that it's been nearly 10 years since we met for 30 seconds at the show in Tulsa. I mean, it doesn't seem like 10 years. But it has been, as of the fall this year.

When we move back, we will be moving to Guanajuato, Guanajuato. Formerly we were in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. So we'll be an hour away from where we were. But that's where we will be living upon our return. And that's where Phil's Magnum will be living unless Lee somehow gets his hands on it.

I won't be doing the Ice Cream Store thing anymore, although I can't say for sure yet what I will be doing. Something, I suppose. Anyway, the next time we meet we can forget the Ice Cream and go straight to the stories and the bourbon. Yes, I like bourbon! You keep yourself healthy too! Cheers, my friend!

Guanajuato is one of my favorite places in the world! I’ve always said if the world goes to hell, you’ll find me in Guanajuato. For several years about twenty years ago, I spent a couple of months each winter there. Of course, a lovely señorita was involved. Her family still lives there, in a lovely home just steps from the church in Plaza San Francisco, not far from the Jardin and Teatro Juarez. Maybe I’ll make it back sometime, if no longer for the girl but to see your RM.

Our property is just outside of town on the road to San Miguel. It's zoned as City though, so (in theory) we'll have "city services". It's a sizeable property my wife landed when she worked as a speech writer for the former Governer of the State of Guanajuato Juan Carlos Romero. It is big enough for us to have a house of our own and three or four little guest houses for people looking for a place to get away from it all. I mean it's not huge or anything but it's better than just a small lot.

Guanajuato is a pretty violent State right now, I hope that improves -- although I am skeptical that much will happen until a new leadership comes in. Either way, we'll be going back. Everything has to be built yet, but once I've got a room for you to sleep in, a porch for you to sit on, and a pool and BBQ area for you to tell me how much better you would have made it on the money I had to do it, you'll be welcome to show up for a visit or a stay.

It’s disappointing to hear things have gotten bad in GTO. When I was spending a lot of time there, I felt extremely safe. I befriended a woman who had a wonderful estate, almost castle-like, in Marfil. It was part of a former mine that she had restored and made into a fantastic residence. She was friends with then President Vincente Fox and one evening I returned to find police and security people all over the neighborhood and around the house. I was allowed to enter the estate with surprisingly little trouble and walked into the kitchen to find my friend, Clarita, and President Fox visiting. The three of us sat up until very late talking and eating, and Fox treated me like an old friend. I really miss it there, it was a wonderful time in my life. I’ll follow your updates here and hope one day to meet you.

It's not a tunnel that's needed. It's someone like Phil Maher, who could have "diplomatically" moved the item from Point "A" to Point "B" without overzealous scrutiny. I actually keep working on that problem, but from up here in Canada it's difficult. Once I get back to the hot-zone, opportunity might come knocking.

On the topic of Maher, he showed me a photo once of his P-51 in flight. He told me sadly that it was "the last photo taken of his P-51 'Muriel', and that it wasn't him flying it in the photo". From what I remember, he told me the plane was wrecked on landing back on Iwo. I believe the pilot was either uninjured, or at least not seriously injured but that the plane itself was instantly bulldozed to the side of the strip to make way for other planes coming in to land that were short on fuel. At least, that's how I remember him telling it.

Digging around over the last few days I stumbled upon the Home Page of the 78th Fighter Squadron "P-51's and Pilots of the 78th on Iwo Jima 1945 (by aircraft number and pilot)".

78th Fighter Squadron P-51's of WWII

Of interest (at least, to me) is a photo on the 3rd row down thus:

with the note underneath: 111 and 122, Muriel IV, V Phil Maher.

Looking two rows further down, there is this photo (which is the photo Maher showed me in his office):

with the notation: "122, Muriel V *Walt Kreimann"

If you scroll down to the bottom of the Home Page on the link, the asterick on the bottom of the page reads: "* 122 was Phil Maher's assigned aircraft (named after his wife) but it was Walt Kreimann who last flew it before it was lost in action."

All very interesting to me and I believe -- because I spoke so often of Phil Maher within this thread as well as Phil Roettinger (because at the end of the day, they were good friends) -- that this little addition about Maher and his plane isn't out of place here.

If the .22 RM is ever found, that might top this one, but for now it's definitely the most interesting story.

I would have loved to talk to Phil... I’ve done a ton of research on the Pacific war, and wrote a novel (unpublished) about a couple ex-Marines who go back to the Solomons in search of lost colonial gold. Set on Bougainville!

Edit: Didn't realize this was a zombie thread, hadn't seen it before and loved the story! I just looked up details; Cape Torokina was where the original landings were, Koromokina is a river leading inland (as was the Piva), and Piva Forks was a battle inland a bit near where the Piva River forked.

The Battle of Cibik's Ridge was part of the Piva Forks battle; and *that* is the key location in my novel... Cibik's Ridge. So my book is set literally right where Phil fought.
