At the end of the show this ole shooter came in the door at 1st I passed but on his 3rd time around the tables I relented. Serial # 58201. According to SCS&W 3rd Ed. Square butts started around 58000 serial # so could this be one of the 1st square butt Targets?

Dan;

It's a very nice looking example. Are the grips numbered to the revolver?

Thanks Guys,

Lefty,

I put the grips on it as they looked better than the post war magnas it was sporting when I got it.

I tried to go read Mikes posts last night but after driving 500 miles I couldnt keep my eyes open.

Dan,
It most likely shipped with concave grips. (the ones used prior to the gold medallions). They're pretty hard to find. Of all my misc. grips, I don't have an example of that style in either K or N. Sounds like a job for DW to reproduce some.

We do get up here -sometimes even with the sun !

The square butt was introduced in 1904 - I think middle to late
1904. At least that is what Roy says in his book. About that time
serial numbers were in the late 48xxx to very early 50xxx.

I've always assumed it was about 50,000 when the square butt was
introduced. I've not owned any early square-butt M&P's , only
targets. It may be that the first square-butts were M&P's.

The earliest square-butt target I have seen is 59xxx . That is
all I can tell you about this.

As to the grips , they should be the concave non-medallions.
What is on the gun right now is convex non-medallions (1920 - 1930),
and can be easily converted to concave. Takes about 10 minutes,
and they come out perfect. I can describe the process, if you are
interested.

Thanks Mike,

So this might be a good time for a post requesting serial #'s of target 38's and see whats out there. I looked in the collectors database and found very few entries.

Good luck !

Joe Miller set up the original S&WCA web site, and has/had lots of files on
that site. I contributed a lot of numbers to those files. In the category of
.38 pre-WW2 K-frame targets, in the area of interest, there is one at about
51xxx, and the next one is 59xxx (my gun). Mine is a square butt - I don't
know what 51xxx is. None of the earlier ones have the butt configuration
indicated, but of course, most will be round-butt.

I should add that these 1899 and 1902 target survivors are few and far between.
There are 22 1899's and 22 1902's !
