I was reading my march 2008 Guns and AMMO mag. when i saw this question & answer page. One of the questions was what kind of hand gun was German General Hermann Goering carring when he was captured? Answer ( A Smith & Wesson 38 M&P )IT is now on display at the West Point Museum.I though that was very interesting.

I haven't read the article, however that S&W of Goering's got "presented" to several of the officers present at the surrender, so they could benefit from the photo op. The Army photogs took quite a few photos that day.

There was a very long thread on this gun on this forum several months ago. A lot of interesting information was exchanged before the topic drifted from S&Ws to Nazis. Can't find it with the search function...pity.

The Goering gun is mentioned in the SCSW III as having shipped around 1934 - it's Model 1905 4th issue.

I always wondered why Goering didn't have a Luger or P38 instead of this "Amy"-Gun. But i have no explanation.

On this page here is a colored picture of his gun and holster and the serial# is almost to be seen.

Would be interesting to get this gun lettered.
I wonder if this gun was bought upon special order by Goering or he just entered the gun shop in Hamburg in 1934 and picked up just what attracted him most of the guns offered.

Goering's M&P was shipped to the Peters Arms Co in Hamburg in May 1934. It is SN 642357.

Where/Why do you know this. Have you had it lettered or did the officials at the West Point Museum let it letter by Mr. Jinks?
Was it the only gun sent to Peters Arms in Hamburg?

The M&P looks like it is in very nice condition. What is the little automatic shown? Looks like
a Browning maybe.

The appearance of the automatic is that what everyone would expect to be a typical Hermann-Meyer-gun.
I always wonder why is daughter didn't try to get these things back from the U.S. at least the guest book because it was a wedding gift, he possessed it privately and didn't have anything to do with his "job" in the Third Reich. Even the M&P was his privat property.
His daughter Edda is still proud to bear the name "Göring" but she never denied the crimes committed by her father. Not so Himmler's daughter Gudrun. She is still convinced that her father always did the right thing.
