Default Baby Chief Front Sight

About at what serial numbers did the half penny front sight change to the smooth ramp sight then to the serrated ramp sight?

There were half round, smooth ramp and serrated ramps. I don't think there was a cut off, I believe they were mixed.

The sight changed from half moon to ramp at around s/n 4000, give or take a little.

Half moon at 11xxx is odd. Are you sure you don't have one too many x's on that Serial number ? While no definitive cut off, the progression on the front sight was from the half moon, to the smooth ramp, to the serrated ramp. Naturally anything could have been special ordered.

Very early they are half round. Then they are mixed up serial number wise, but finished up serrated.

Hondo44 would know for sure, but my impression is that the smooth ramp sights are the least common. I don't think they stuck around for very long.

Round sights began at #1 and the highest reported round sight is #116XX. The earliest reported smooth ramp is #2945 and latest currently reported is #12340. Lowest known serrated ramp sight is #6541 and the highest on a Baby J is #45963. During the overlap period of #6541 to #116XX when all three were being produced, there are many, many more ramp sights reported.

Got it. Thanks, Jim. Makes sense.
Between smooth and serrated, is it your impression that there were more of the latter than the former? Seems to be my experience, but I'm primarily a K frame collector so this is pushing the envelope of my knowledge.
Thanks again.
