Does anyone know if modern J frame grips will fit an older I frame (32 HE)? Will there need to be any fitting to make them work? Any info would be helpful.

The modern grips will be a bit longer. If they are wood, you could rasp/file down the extra length and then contour them to your frame. The grips for the I's are hard ti find in decent shape but fairly new J frames are quite available. I did this for a Baby Chief Special a couple of years ago and it turned out quite nicely. Just takes some time and be careful not to remove too much wood as it's hard to get it back on.

Is the extra length at the top of the grips or the bottom? I have found a set of target grips and am hoping to put them on the 32 HE.

They are longer at the bottom.

If they are target grips, then the excess space at the bottom will be hidden inside the grips. The only difference in I's and J's is about 1/4" in length. Top, front, and back should all line up the same.

I fitted a set of walnut J Frame boot grips from Kelly's to this Pre 30 Improved I Frame. Had to remove about an 1/8th" from the bottom.

Although not factory I really like the way your I frame looks with those boot grips--might go that route with mine.
