Default DOB for M1917

Not sure if there is more to learn about this one? Basic 1917, I think. Maybe someone can tell me something I don't know about it. It's SN 154892. I'm thinking late 1918? Which ones had the rounded frame top and which didn't? Was that just the commercial ones?

Note the barrel is extremely pitted and worn. Would I be doing history a dis-service if I had the barrel chopped down and the gun re-finished? I truly loved the thread with cowtown cop's 1917s, and I really, really like bobbed, chopped, Jovino-style N frame snubs, etc. I would rather put some money into this and be able to use it than hide it away. Any thoughts?
